You’re making a real contribution – surrounded by energetic, inspiring people who are driven to make a difference as well. Monash is a place where you’ll be able to develop your career in exciting, sometimes unexpected ways – putting you in the best possible position for a rewarding future.

The Opportunity

An opportunity has arisen for a Linux Software Developer within the Office of Learning and Teaching. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of an e-Exam software system and providing specialist technical input to the nationally funded project 'Transforming Exams Across Australia'. Your work on continuing the development of the e-Exam software platform will contribute to the future of high stakes testing across ten partner institutions. It will use a range of open source, Linux-based technologies and BYOD (bring-your-own-device) to facilitate controlled and scalable provision of hardware whilst greatly expanding the range of assessment tasks possible in examinations.

To be successful you will have a degree/tertiary qualification in a relevant field with extensive relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training. You will need excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to apply/use high-level analytical and technical diagnostic skills, discretion, innovation and professional expertise to solve complex software and systems problems.

On a technical level applicants must have demonstrated expertise in software development with and for the Linux operating system, using suitable programming languages, user interface/widget design and problem-solving techniques because these skills will be critical in successfully delivering on the e-Exams project. This work will be underpinned by experience using open source development methodologies and tools such as GIT, package management, SquashFS, ramdisk, network/admin, Libre office, IBUS, WINE, using languages such as Bash, PHP, C, GTK, Javascript, working with security/permissions and on web-based, database driven applications and services using open source technologies such as Apache and MySQL. Experience in clearly documenting code and procedures will also be important.
If this sounds like a position that suits your current career focus we look forward to hearing from you.

This role is a full-time position for 3 months with a further 6-month extension possible; however, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated for a lower fraction over an extended duration (e.g 0.8FTE over 4 months.). The position will be based at Clayton campus.

Your application must address the selection criteria. Please refer to "How to apply for Monash Jobs".
