The newly established Temasek History Research Centre (THRC) at ISEAS seeks Visiting Fellow to serve as Director of its annual Field School under the Centre’s Southeast Asian Heritage Programme.

Temasek History Research Centre:

The Temasek History Research Centre (THRC) is dedicated to the historical and archaeological investigation of Singapore and its relationship with the immediate region from the 14th to the 19th century. The Southeast Asian Heritage Programme will take the form of an archaeology or art history Field School for Singaporean undergraduate students.


The Visiting Fellow is expected to:

  • Design, lead and implement a 2-3 week Field School programme in an ASEAN country for undergraduate students who may not have prior knowledge of archaeology or premodern history;
  • Liaise and coordinate with counterpart institutions in host country to arrange for necessary permits, accommodations, meals, and domestic transportation;
  • Prepare necessary Field School reports and work on other administrative matters;
  • Engage the media to profile the Field School.

 Research proposals:

The Visiting Fellow may wish to submit a research proposal in addition to his/her role as Field School Director. Proposals may include, but are not restricted to, themes such as:

  • Singapore’s premodern role as a maritime trading port or centre;
  • The island’s premodern economy, culture, and society, and its links to the region;
  • Understanding Temasek as a political and cultural entity;
  • Singapore’s premodern relationship and engagement with political entities in the immediate region.

The proposal should discuss the topic to be examined, plans for any fieldwork and duration, projected timeline of research, and output.


  • A PhD. in Archaeology/Art History
  • Expertise in Southeast Asian archaeology and/or premodern history.
  • Experience in conducting archaeological excavations or field work in Southeast Asia.
  • Good organisational and student-management skills.
  • High level of editorial and writing skills in English.
  • Ability to speak a Southeast Asian language preferred.
  • Positive work attitude, great communication skills, and ability to work under tight schedule.

 Successful applicants will receive:

  • A highly competitive monthly stipend commensurate with his/her rank and experience;
  • Short-term fieldwork allowance (if applicable);
  • A round-trip economy airfare between the home country of the researcher and Singapore (applicable to non-Singaporeans only).
