MTI’s ASEAN Division is charged with protecting and advancing Singapore’s economic interests in ASEAN as a regional fora by:

  • Formulating Singapore’s economic policy and safeguarding Singapore’s economic interest in ASEAN;
  • Driving and championing ASEAN-wide initiatives to deepen economic integration in the region;
  • Implementing plans to expand economic space through engagement with ASEAN as a regional bloc and its partnerships with other countries, through active involvement in FTA negotiations and economic cooperation; and
  • Actively advancing and advocating our companies’ interests in the ASEAN region, Singapore’s key trading partner and investment destination, by lowering tariffs and non-tariff barriers for Singapore’s exports and investments, and improving trade facilitation and regulatory coherence, amongst others.

As an ASEAN officer, you will be assigned to one of two specialised teams covering: (i) trade in goods, and (ii) digital economy, services and investment. You will also drive our economic engagement with selected external partners of ASEAN. You will deepen your knowledge, skills and expertise on a myriad of uniquely regional and international trade issues and apply them in the following areas:

  • Developing and implementing Singapore’s foreign economic policy;
  • Representing Singapore in trade and investment negotiations in ASEAN;
  • Participating in ASEAN meetings and conferences;
  • Collaborating with external stakeholders, such as Singapore-based and foreign companies, business chambers and the general public;
  • Ensuring Singapore’s full and timely implementation of trade obligations in ASEAN; and
  • Analysing trade developments in the ASEAN region and the potential implications on Singapore


  • Trained in Economics, Law, Political Science, International Relations, Accounting, Business or related disciplines is preferred, but not essential
  • Keen interest in international economic affairs and negotiation;
  • Strong analytical and conceptual abilities, with an eye for detail;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to work well in teams;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment; and
  • Willingness to travel frequently
