Job Summary/Purpose: MUSC Emergency Department is looking for a full-time Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join its team of Advanced Practice Providers. Incumbent will provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services for direct patient care in the Adult Emergency Departments in the Main University Hospital (MUHA) and Ashley River Tower (ART) as delegated by the Emergency Medicine physician.

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will work with physicians and team management to assist in direct patient care, case management, practice development, and implementation of policies and procedures focused on patient-centered care models.

Minimum Training and Education: Currently licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the state of SC or licensed as a Physician Assistant by the National Board of Medical Examiners or the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Requires certification in Basic Life Support. Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program. Two years’ experience in the acute care setting is required, or completion of an Emergency Medicine fellowship/residency instead. Thorough knowledge of methods, management, principles and practices of managing both high and low acuity patients presenting to the Emergency Department. Demonstrates the ability to collaborate in a positive, collegial manner with other disciplines.

o   FNP: can see children and adults

o   ANP: can see adults only

o   Acute NP: have ICU specific training

Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Currently licensed (or eligible) in the state of South Carolina as a Physician Assistant by the National Board of Medical Examiners or the American Academy of Physician Assistants or as an Advanced Practice Nurse (ANP, Acute NP, or FNP). Requires certification in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities: Provide direct patient care in the Emergency Department (Main University Hospital and ART), perform the evaluation and workup of new patients, and assist in management of returning patients. Obtain patient history, perform physical exams, order appropriate testing, interpret lab test results, and formulate assessment on patients presenting to the Emergency Department. Assist with tele-urgent care services provided by Emergency Medicine faculty and staff as needed.

Potential precepting of MUSC PA or NP students during their clinical year.

Physical Requirements:  Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
