Job Summary/Purpose: To manage all aspects of outpatient neurological care of headache and multiple sclerosis patients. Will actively participate in all areas of clinical research and community education as needed.

Must be able to work with minimal supervision.

Minimum Training and Education: Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or Physician Assistant program.Currently licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the state of SC or licensed as a Physician Assistant by the National Board of Medical Examiners or the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Requires certification in Basic Life Support.


Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Currently eligible or licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse (specifically ­­­ANP or FNP) in the state of SC or Licensed (or certification eligible) as a Physician Assistant by the National Board of Medical Examiners or the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Requires certification in Basic Life Support.

Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities: Preferred experience of 1 years in outpatient clinical medical practice as an APRN or PA, but not required. Independent with strong communication and interpersonal skills. Computer literate. Physician Assistant with special expertise in neurological evaluation and management preferred. Experience with electronic medical records helpful. Graduation from an accredited physician assistant program. 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Assesses, diagnoses, and manages outpatients with neurological symptoms, primarily related to migraine headaches and multiple sclerosis. Recognizes and assesses changes in patient status, intervening when necessary. Implements measures to minimize risk.

Clinical coordinator for headache disorders and multiple sclerosis.

Assembles and evaluates post‐encounter (i.e.labs, referrals, etc.). Communicates with patients, families, and/or appropriate providers. Facilitates appropriate and timely utilization of available clinical services for patients and families. Coordinates health care needs with other members of health care team and non‐medical providers.

Assesses and provides educational instruction and material to meet the learning needs of patients, family members and other health care providers. Communicates advanced knowledge and skills to other health care professionals and the community.

Demonstrates accountability for professional competency and growth in the areas of headache disorders and multiple sclerosis. Maintains all protocols and records of all patient, family, and community service contacts including phone and letter. Provides data for evaluation and billable service meeting audit criteria. Serves as an advocate to ensure access to needed and desired services. Assist families in problem solving to promote selfcare. Maintains certification as physician assistant. Maintains and improves knowledge through reading, continuing education, and conference attendance. Participates in appropriate professional organizations.

Potential precepting of MUSC NP or PA students during their clinical year.   

Physical Requirements:  Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
