Location of Position: Charleston, SC (for first 6 months) & Beaufort, SC (after 6 months)

Job Summary/Purpose: The Dermatology APP (APRN/PA-C) is a valued member of the care team and his/her primary responsibility is the management of patients within the Beaufort market area. The APP works under the supervision of the physician team responsible for providing comprehensive care for patients with general dermatology needs. Store-and-forward assessments and transfer of pathology samples to MUSC for faculty review will be incorporated.   A synchronous, video-based modality will also be in place for the purpose of physician supervision and clinical assistance for this practitioner when practicing in the remote location. The APP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and provides leadership to the organization and profession.

Minimum Training and Education: The successful candidate will have completed an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or an A.R. C. approved Physician Assistant program.  Current licensure/eligibility as an Advanced Practice Nurse (ANP or FNP) in the state of South Carolina or as a Physician Assistant by the NCCPA and Board of Medical Examiners required. South Carolina Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant DEA certificate to prescribe from the State Medical/Nursing Board will also be required. Through knowledge of methods, management, principles and practices of clinical counseling and education services.  Demonstrates an ability to collaborate in a positive, collegial manner with other disciplines.

Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications from the American Heart Association must be kept current.

Excellent oral & written communication skills, strong analytical abilities, an ability to work in a fast paced and changing environment, and critical thinking skills are required.

Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Current licensure/eligibility as an Advanced Practice Nurse (ANP) in the state of South Carolina or as a Physician Assistant by the NCCPA and Board of Medical Examiners required.  South Carolina Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant DEA certificate to prescribe from the State Medical/Nursing Board will also be required.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:

    • Take comprehensive history and performs physical examinations.
    • Evaluate and treat on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice protocols and collaborative scope of practice agreement.
    • Perform the following procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the Department Chair and/or supervising physician:

      • Skin biopsy
      • KOH exam
      • Scabies prep
      • Cryotherapy
      • Intralesional injection
    • Initiates referrals to other health care provides, and/or consult with the attending physician or collaborating physician.
  2. Document and bill for direct care provided.
  3. Utilize current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.
  4. Perform and participate in quality/performance improvement activities.
  5. Participate in and support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
  6. Demonstrate responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  7. Potential to precept MUSC advanced practice providers; and facilitate the learning of other new team members.

Orientation And Work Schedule: Orientation will include 6 months of daytime shifts working with the Dermatology care team in Charleston, which will include rotating residents and fellows and attending physicians that are working in an academic environment. Following satisfactory completion of the orientation period, full time employment will consist of daytime shifts in the Beaufort market area.

Physical Requirements:  Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
