Job Summary/Purpose: The NP/PA will interact directly with all of the attending vascular surgeons, residents, and students from multiple health disciplines at MUSC, hospital-based and clinic-based nurses, vascular laboratory staff, social workers, and continuity of care managers. The APP is an integral part of the inter-professional provider team that cares for vascular surgery patients to help optimize quality and continuity of care in both in- and outpatient settings.

This position may require some travel within the state.

Job Duties:

Outpatient Setting:

1) 25% - The NP/PA will perform and document appropriate histories, physical exams, assess and develop a plan for new, return and hospital discharged patients in the pre-procedure outpatient setting. This includes, but not limited to, ordering diagnostic studies, vascular labs, interpreting results, collecting and evaluating outside data, and prescribing medications in accordance to their respective scope of practice.

2) 10% - NP/PA will assist in educating patients, pre and post op, including management of cardiovascular risk factors and assisting administrative staff/Registered Nurses in answering and responding to clinical issues that require medical decision making.

3) 30% - Participate as needed in vascular surgery clinical activities, including new patient evaluation  under physician supervision, post-operative clinics and follow-up activities in support of the Vascular Quality Initiative, outreach facilities, and assist with outpatient minor procedures and wound care as assigned.

Inpatient Setting:

4) 30% - Monitor patient progress via regular communication with the attending, resident and nursing staff, assist with discharge summaries, participate in discharge planning and coordination of the post-discharge care of inpatients to minimize re-admissions.


5) 5% - Attendance at weekly Vascular Surgery conferences designated Department of Surgery Grand Rounds and Department/Division meetings and activities to encourage proactive decision making and initiative to optimize patient care with physician guidance.

Minimum Training and Education: Currently licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the state of SC or licensed as a Physician Assistant by the National Board of Medical Examiners or the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Requires certification in Basic Life Support.

Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:  Currently eligible or licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the state of SC or Licensed (or certification eligible) as a Physician Assistant by the National Board of Medical Examiners or the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Requires certification in Basic Life Support.

Preferred Qualifications: DEA certificate to prescribe from the State Medical/Nursing Board will also be required. Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications from the American Heart Association must be kept current. Excellent oral & written communication skills, strong analytical abilities, an ability to work in a fast paced and changing environment, and critical thinking skills are required. Previous adult surgical cardio-vascular experience.

Physical Requirements:  Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
