Job summary: A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is immediately available for a motivated, creative, and highly collaborative researcher to join the Bartee lab in the department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Medical University of South Carolina.

The Bartee lab is interested in understanding virus/host interactions and how these interactions can be modulated so that viral therapy can be used to successfully treat cancer (a field known as oncolytics). Oncolytic treatment functions by inducing localized inflammation and the recruitment of an adaptive immune response. While this immune response is initially generated to combat the viral infection, once begun, tumor-infiltrating immune cells also respond to non-viral targets within the tumor, including tumor-specific antigens. The goal of the current position is to understand the breadth, specificity, and magnitude of the anti-tumor immune responses induced by virotherapy and how these responses can be modified to improve treatment.

This position is well-funded through a variety of long-term extramural awards allowing for a significant degree of exploration to take place. This provides an excellent opportunity to develop novel tools and models which the successful candidate can use to understand the basic and translational impact of a variety of cancer therapies.

Lab and Location:

The Bartee lab is located in newly renovated lab space within the Basic Sciences Building and is part of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, as well as the Cancer Immunology Program within the Hollings Cancer Center. This provides successful applicants access to a wide range of cutting-edge core resources on the MUSC campus. The Hollings Cancer Center is an NCI-designated cancer center, indicative of the strong institutional commitment toward human immunology and translational research.

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is located in Charleston, SC—a beautiful and historic city on the Atlantic coast. Charleston has attractive beaches, great weather for a wide range of outdoor activities, and is culturally rich with food, art, and music
