Job Summary/Purpose: The Director of Nursing for Children’s Hospital reports to the Service Line Administrator of the Children’s Hospital and the Service Line Administrator for Women’s Health. Under limited supervision, the Director of Nursing for Children’s Hospital provides clinical leadership and direction to inpatient areas of the Children’s Hospital, directing all clinical and support activities. This role directs the delivery of services ensuring integration with service line initiatives, performance improvement measures, strategic, business, and organizational goals/objectives. This position collaborates with academic units to promote and support academic research opportunities within the Children’s Hospital.

Minimum Training and Education:   A master’s degree in nursing and five (5) years of pediatric and women's leadership work experience; or a master’s degree in a related healthcare field or management with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing and five (5) years pediatric and women's leadership work experience required. Prior director level experience in a Children's Hospital preferred.  Position requires extensive knowledge of management and leadership principles, budgeting methods and services related to area of responsibility.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:   The Job Responsibilities section is weighted as follows for each type of MUHA employee. If the section weight is noted as Pass/Fail, the score for this section is not included in the overall score. However, an employee receiving less than a 2.5 overall score for the Job Responsibilities section will not be eligible for a performance increase for the year.

1d. Schedules and conducts routine group meetings attended by the director, managers and other leadership staff.
1e. Is accessible to the director, managers and coordinators.
1f. Has a visible presence with unit staff; periodically attends unit staff meetings; allocates time to make area rounds; is accessible to area staff upon request.
1g. Collaborates with Vice President for Clinical Operations, Administrators, Directors and Medical Directors of all MUSC Medical Center service areas to design plan, implement and assess provision of appropriate services to facilitate the vision of MUSC Medical Center.
1.2 Ensures for operational efficiency through appropriate utilization of resources and fiscal accountability.

2a. Monitors data for areas with available patient satisfaction surveys.
2b. Allocates time to make patient/family rounds; communicates with manager/coordinator relative to findings.
2c. Interfaces with staff to ascertain problems, issues, concerns they have in delivery of care and services.
2d. Is aware of JCAHO process improvement requirements and ensures that areas of service are in compliance.
2e. Understands the MUSC Medical Center process improvement approach and ensures that areas of service are in compliance with plan.
2f. Monitors CQI programs established by each area of service.
2g. Has an awareness of appropriate and meaningful benchmarks for each area of service covered. Ensures that the director, managers and staff utilize this information in a manner that facilitates improved quality in the care provided.
2h. Has open communication with physicians to ensure their satisfaction with level of quality in care provides.

1.4 Formulates strategic and long-range goals and objectives for the Children’s Hospital and Women’s Health that promote and support the overall MUSC and Medical Center Strategic Plans, develops and communicates to staff goals and objectives; provides ongoing analysis of the Children’s Hospital areas strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
