Job Summary/Purpose: Under limited supervision, the Rapid Response Team (RRT) Registered Nurse functions under the direction of the Nurse Director and clinical emergency response leadership.  The RRT RN is responsible for coordination of Rapid Response Team assessment of patient prioritization. This role implements nursing interventions to ensure optimal patient outcomes, documentation of interventions and outcomes, communication with other team members and disciplines, safe delivery of age appropriate and culturally sensitive patient care in accordance with MUSC standards and policies.

The RRT nurse is accountable for addressing the patient/family biological, emotional, developmental, psychosocial, and educational needs. This position facilitates appropriate nursing care for urgent/emergent potential and actual clinical deterioration.  Duties include rapid responses within an assigned facility, development of practice guidelines, follow-up regarding patient care, data collection and analysis, education and evaluation of patient care and near miss events.

Minimum Training and Education: Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date. Refer to policy A141 for more details.  Two years of critical care nursing experience, to develop nursing process skills and to organize and prioritize all types of patient care on an immediate basis is required. The RRT nurse must have a current employment and unit sustainment commitment to a MUSC Critical Care Unit in good standing in order to maintain competencies and participate fully in process improvement activities for critical care.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Requires current state of South Carolina Registered Nurse License or a Multi-state Nursing License from a participating state in the NLC (Nurse Licensure Compact). CCRN certification and NIH Stroke Scale/Score (NIHSS) training are required.  American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent is required. American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for adults/Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) for pediatrics is required.
