Job Summary/Purpose: The MUSC Burn Center: Program Director Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will provide assistance to the CEO/MUSC Admin/Burn Director for effective operational management of Burn Center for both adult and pediatric service lines. Individual will also provide clinical coverage as an advanced practice provider when needed to facilitate continuity of patient care, to avoid temporary gaps in service. (Provide burn trauma inpatient/outpatient care, first assist in surgery).

Minimum Training and Education: Currently licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the state of SC or licensed as a Physician Assistant by the National Board of Medical Examiners or the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Requires certification in Basic Life Support.

  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or Physician Assistant program.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience as an APP in a regional burn unit
  • Demonstrates an ability to collaborate in a positive, collegial manner with other disciplines.
  • Previous experience in burn research and ABA verification planning preferred but not mandatory.
  • Operating room and critical care experience preferred

 

Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:  Currently eligible or licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the state of SC or Licensed (or certification eligible) as a Physician Assistant by the National Board of Medical Examiners or the American Academy  of Physician Assistants. Requires certification in Basic Life Support. Requires certification in ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support). PALS (Pediatric Adv Life Support) and ABLS (Advanced Burn Life Support) preferred but not mandatory

  • Nurse Practitioner (FNP only as this position evaluates pediatrics through geriatric patients):  BSN, MN, or MSN and official recognition as an Advanced Practice RN by the Board of Nursing for South Carolina.  The applicant should be licensed as a Registered Nurse and hold official recognition as a Nurse Practitioner from the SC Board of Nursing or application pending.  RNFA preferred or willing to obtain and maintain ABSA certification within one year of start.
  • Physician Assistant:  Graduate of a Physician Assistant training program approved by the Council of Medical Education of the American Medical Association.  The applicant must be eligible for PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants, Licensed by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners or application pending.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Operational goals:

  • Develop and implement business/clinical model including organizational structuring, talent acquisition, budgetary optimization, quality care delivery process, patient engagement, develop metrics for sustainability, and growth with both adult and pediatric service lines.
  • Increase surgical/procedural activity to meet projected organizational financial performance goal.
  • Utilize Lean Six Sigma tools to enhance clinical operative efficiency by reducing waste and identifying/eliminating unproductive practice activities. 
  • Establish and maintain value-based care through QI/PI process, value stream mapping, PDSA cycle, and project charter.
  • Analyze and strategize for best practice for effective clinical engagement to maximize revenue cycle, while reducing non-revenue generating activities. 
  • Establish and maintain strategies to sustain positive (Just) culture for all burn staff.
  • Assist in streamlining clinical documentation for accuracy and efficiency to improve documentation integrity, coding, and billing capture.
  • Maintain and grow clinical research effort through organizational support, logistic/budget management.
  • Increase market growth of burn trauma service in the region, through establishing community partners for improvement in referral pattern.
  • Establish burn trauma community education and outreach program (burn survivor support group).
  • Facilitate burn center verification in conjunction with burn center director, program manager, and other key stakeholders
  • Establish educational partnership with local university PA/NP/RN/MD/PT/OT programs for guest lecture, clinical rotation and develop pipeline for future workforce acquisition.
  • Assist in developing and maintain adjunct service lines (plastic reconstruction, limb salvage, complex wound, ablative laser program).
  • Maintain necessary accreditation and certification for operational continuity.
  • Support continual medical education and in-service to maintain staff clinical excellence and best practice.

Job Duties:

  • Provide assistance to the CEO/MUSC Admin/Burn Director for effective operational management of Burn Center for both adult and pediatric service lines.
  • Monitor clinical effectiveness based on patient satisfaction, work force efficiency and financial growth with direct input from the CEO/MUSC Admin/Burn Director.
  • Receive directives from Burn Director and other key leadership stakeholders to achieve optimal patient outcomes, and revenue production.
  • Assist the CEO/MUSC Admin/Burn Director in providing operational oversight, synergy and strategic fiscal growth plans for the Burn Center, establish formal collaboration with all interrelated service lines.
  • Work in collaboration with C-suite, and Medical Staff for corporate alignment, and maximize patient service delivery through quality/process improvement strategies.
  • Assist in providing and executing operational strategies in meeting patient needs and identifying opportunities to increase services and volume.
  • Collaborate with CEO/AVP/Burn Director, and stakeholders to establish best operational practice, positive culture for improvement in staff retention/development/performance.
  • Assist CEO/AVP/Burn Director and all stakeholders in performing utilization/cost analysis.
  • Assist Burn Director with day-to-day clinical/administrative operations, liaison to attending MDs, management of program manager, and advance practice provider workforce.
  • Collaborate with OR leadership to maintain burn surgical efficiency, utilization and workflow.
  • Participate in medical executive board meeting to ensure corporate alignment.
  • Strategize and improve transition care to minimize LOS, and readmission.
  • Assist Burn Director in development of best practice through standardizing operational protocols.
  • Provide clinical coverage as an advanced practice provider when needed to facilitate continuity of patient care, to avoid temporary gaps in service. (provide burn trauma inpatient/outpatient care, first assist in surgery).

 Physical Requirements:  Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
