Job Summary/Purpose: Providing support to Neurosurgeon(s) during outpatient visits; provide care in outpatient clinics; collaborate with Neurosurgery teams, hospital and outpatient care teams to coordinate patient care; communicate with patients regarding care and concerns; provide administrative support and follow up to ensure patient care is orderly and effective; follow protocols for clinical trials, if necessary. 

Minimum Training and Education: Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or Physician Assistant program. Thorough knowledge of methods, management, principles and practices of clinical counseling and education services. Demonstrates and ability to collaborate in a positive, collegial manner with other disciplines.

Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Currently licensed (or eligible) in the state of South Carolina as a Physician Assistant by the National Board of Medical Examiners or the American Academy of Physician Assistants or as an Advanced Practice Nurse. Requires certification in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. For NP's specifically, must possess, or be willing to obtain and maintain ABSA certification within one year of start at no expense to MUSC.

Degree of Supervision/Collaboration:Under the general supervision/collaboration of an attending physician, the advanced practice provider may initiate, continue and/or modify specific measures based on ongoing assessment, diagnosis, plan, intervention, and evaluation of patient status. Any condition, which exceeds the education and training of, or raises question or concern by the judgment of the advanced practice provider, shall require referral and direct evaluation by a physician.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Inpatient (20%) -  daily inpatient discharges, post surgeries and OR schedule, round on post op patients daily, round on post op patients one weekend per month,  responsible for inpatient consults, on call duties and ER paging, collaborates with neurosurgeon on OR scheduling, ER consults, and case closures, and report morning rounding results.

Outpatient (70%) – Evaluating and managing neurosurgical patients; provide primary and specialized care to the patient population; provide direct care at the physician assistant/nurse practitioner level to spine and other neurosurgery patients; analyze, interpret and prioritize subjective and objective patient data, independent practice for new patient intake and consults with or without referral and limited imaging, responsible for two week post-surgical follow up care, remove staples, refill RXs, ; communicate with family members regarding patient care and concerns

Administrative (10%) - Provide administrative support and follow up to ensure patient care is orderly and effective; provide clinical instruction and oversight to nursing staff as needed.  Follow up phone calls, request imaging and referrals, organize peer-to-peer review panels with payors, collaborate with clinic manager on payor appeals and denied claims, collect, analyze, and submit for review appeals data (medical necessity, insufficient documentation, etc.), maintain surgical consent forms, maintain current licensure and BLS training.  Responsible for closing all encounters within 72 hours.

Physical Requirements:  Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
