Job Duties:
10Keep laboratory clean and maintain laboratory equipment. Ensure that tissue processor, embedding station, microtome, and immunohistochemical retrieval machine are properly maintained and serviced. Sterilize photographic mirrors and retractors.Essential
10Log in specimens and maintain paperwork files for the laboratory.Essential
15Accession specimens each day and prepare grossing area for pathologists. Ensure that all paperwork is complete on biopsy request forms received by the laboratory. Contact doctors’ offices for missing informationEssential
15Perform special stains on histopathologic materials, as well as on routine special stains on tissue sections. Perform advanced special stains using immunohistochemical techniques.Essential
35Prepare regular biopsy material for evaluation by pathologists. Embeds tissue, cuts, stains, and cover slips oral biopsy slides. Ensures proper decalcification of hard tissue specimens.Essential
5Perform all required and necessary quality control procedures to satisfy OSHA, HIPPAA, and DHEC regulations. Maintain and update Laboratory Procedure Manual. Perform quality control procedures. Document and maintain all quality control records. Maintain records for specimens sent to other laboratories.Essential
5Perform other tasks as required, including but not limited to maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies.Essential
5Provide histotechnologic support for research projects within the Division of Oral Pathology.Essential


Job summary: This individual will perform histologic procedures on human tissue to include routine histology, decalcification, and special staining procedures for microscopic examination by pathologists. Histologic procedures on animal tissue for research studies will occasionally be required. The individual also will be responsible for maintaining necessary paperwork and documentation for the laboratory.


Payscale Salary Range: UNIV-Band 5: $32,838.00 - $46,799.00 - $60,760.00 (min - mid - max)


FLSA: Hourly


Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: A high school diploma and two years experience or training within the specific work area. Some positions require certification in CPR by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.

Preferred Requirements:  A Bachelor's degree in natural life, or health care science; or an Associate's degree in histotechnology or health care science to include courses in histologic techniques and two years’ experience or the successful completion of a certificate program, and knowledge at a hospital with an accreditatecl histoteclmology program. An individual with HT (ASCP) registration or eligibility is preferred.
