Job summary:

The Division of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Medicine, and the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina are seeking an outstanding physician scientist with peer-reviewed funding in hematologic malignancies and/or bone marrow transplant. Applicants must have an MD or MD PhD degree, be board certified in hematology and/or oncology, and have a strong research background with leadership skills required to drive forward team science. This position is open to advanced Assistant Professors as well as Associate and Full Professors.

The successful candidate will be provided with a significant start-up package, be nominated to an endowed chair, play an integral role in the Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) with significant leadership possibilities. The ideal candidate is expected to be a strong candidate for the open HCC Associate Director of Clinical Sciences position or a Program co-Leader position.

The Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center in South Carolina and has state-of-the-art clinical and research facilities. HCC has NCI approved programs in developmental cancer therapeutics, cancer immunology, cancer biology, and cancer control, as well as multiple shared resource cores and state-of-the-art clinical and research facilities. These include a highly developed clinical trials office with a growing multi-center trials network and Phase I trials program, a translational science laboratory, a robust biorepository and tissue analysis resource, and a clean-cell evaluation and therapy facility. The Blood and Marrow Transplant and Hematologic Malignancies program is the largest in South Carolina, is FACT accredited and supports a robust portfolio of clinical trials. The transplant program is also a Blue Cross Blue Shield “Blue Distinct” Center of Excellence. In addition, clinical and translational research at The Hollings Cancer Center and the University is supported by an NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Award.

Environment: The Hollings Cancer Center at MUSC is the only NCI-Designated Cancer Center in the State of South Carolina, and serves a referral population of 4.5 million. HCC Research Programs include Cancer Biology, Developmental Cancer Therapeutics, Cancer Immunology and Cancer Control. HCC members bring in over $43 M annually in peer-reviewed funding. MUSC has a clean cell facility accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) and a host of state-of-the-art shared core facilities. Clinical and translational research at HCC and MUSC benefits from an NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Award, and several extramural funded pre and post doctoral training programs, including an NCI-funded Paul Calabresi K12 Program.

Job Functions:
In addition to duties as a physician, the physician scientist has the following responsibilities:
• Develop and maintain a program of basic/translation cancer research in hematologic malignancies and/or bone marrow transplant
• Continue peer-reviewed funding
• Collaborate with colleagues in the Hematologic Malignancies Disease Focus Group to develop the clinical trials portfolio
• Develop and implement investigator-initiated interventional treatment trials
• Mentor young investigators in cancer research
• Participate in HCC research program area activities

Preferred Qualifications:
• Doctor of Medicine with or without Doctor of Philosophy
• Board Certified in clinical specialty with nationally-recognized accomplishment and excellence in research
• A distinguished record of scientific achievement evidenced by both publications and a strong track record of extramural peer-reviewed funding and development of interventional treatment trials
• Seasoned cancer specialist who possesses national and/or international recognition in the clinical and research disciplines of cancer
• A strong research program that will advance the clinical and translation research agenda of the Hollings Cancer Center and provide leadership in multidisciplinary clinical programs that advance the science of oncology
• Active clinician
• Eligible and/or licensed to practice medicine in the State of South Carolina

Continuing Education Requirements:
• Participates in continuing educational activities to maintain board certification and SC medical license
