Job Duties:
10%Maintain inventory of all departmental caging equipment. Rotates on call for weekends and holidays in the facility coordination with other supervisors; including fish / frog roundsEssential
20%Makes work assignments within the facility. Instruct and train animal care personnel in job requirements and SOPs; problem-solving for subordinates; handle or assist in unusual situations disciplinary actions when required. Evaluates performance of all animal care technicians in conjunction with Facility Manager. Holds counseling sessions at regularly scheduled intervals.Essential
20%Oversee all physical plant maintenance, repairs and renovations to assure compliance with USDA, NIH, and AAALAC standards. Ensure facilities are properly maintained and problems are promptly reported and repaired. Maintain inventory of all departmental caging equipment. Handle or assist in unusual situations; rotates on call for weekend in the facility coordination with other supervisorsEssential
20%Provide Leadership Management. Understand job expectations and process of achievement. Contribute to a positive and professional team environment. 25%Perform administrative functions including approval of animal procurement sources recordkeeping, oversees health programs for animals, data entry in departmental electronic database census system and provide oversight to the gnotobiotic and TGE Core. Appropriately handle correspondence: email communication and type memos, etc. Record information that is easily retrievable and up to date. Compile and submit financial information on charges to investigators on timely bases.Essential

Job summary: Directs the daily activities involved in the care of research animals at MUSC. Supervises the training of caretaker and technicians in departmental procedures and methods of health care for all species. Supervises the animal facility and its personnel.

 

Payscale Salary Range: UNIV-Band 5: $33,494.00 - $47,734.00 - $61,975.00 (min - mid - max)


FLSA: Hourly


Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: A bachelor's degree in animal husbandry, agriculture or a related field and twelve months experience in agricultural research or animal care that is directly related to the area of employment. Work experience in animal care or agricultural research may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Copy of degree required upon hire.

DLAR Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of laboratory animal physiology, as well as research techniques and methods. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with personnel from diverse educational and technical backgrounds. AALAS Certification at the level of Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) is required within 6 months of eligibility.

(Frequent) Abiilty to lift materials up to 20 lbs., unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to lift 25 lbs. boxes from floor level to a maximum height of 72". (Infrequent) Ability to lift 40 lbs. centrifuge rotors, from floor level to a height of 40 inches, then down 20 inches into centrifuge drum. (Infrequent) Ability to push/pull file boxes from one location to another at floor level, unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to maneuver heavy equipment on bench tops (Frequent) Ability to reach, stretch, bend, while moving items/materials from both sitting and standing positions. (Frequent) Ability to conduct a variety of hand pipefitting operations. (Continuous) Ability to maintain 20/40 vision in both eyes, corrected. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to hear and recognize various alarms emitting from work area systems. (Continuous) Ability to work in a darkroom for processing film, etc. (Continuous) Ability to qualify for the use of cartridge respirators. (Continuous) Ability to work in dusty areas. (Infrequent) May require working with animals of various sizes.

                Must be able to lift 50 lbs above waist routinely.

                Must be able to work with animals.

                May be exposed to animal allergens.

                May be exposed to zoonotic diseases.

                Must be able to work in dusty environments.

                May have to work in wet areas.

                Must be able to properly wear DLAR issued PPE.

                Must be able to work in reverse light cycle rooms.

                May have to work in confined spaces.

                Must be able to understand safety requirements for autoclave, rack washer and tunnel washer
