Job Summary/Purpose:  The ICU APP (APRN/PA-C ) is a valued member of the intensive care team and his/her primary responsibility is the management of a caseload of ICU patients within the MUSC Ashley River Tower.  The APP works under the supervision/collaboration of the critical care physician team responsible for providing comprehensive critical care for a mix of acutely ill surgical and medical patients with a high degree of cardiopulmonary disease and supportive devices.  The ICU APP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and provides leadership to the organization and profession.

Minimum Training and Education: The successful candidate will have completed an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or an A.R. C. approved Physician Assistant program.  Excellent oral & written communication skills, strong analytical abilities, an ability to work in a fast paced and changing environment, and critical thinking skills are required.

Preferred Qualification: At least 1 year of cardiothoracic/cardiovascular critical care RN or NP/PA-C experience is preferred. Acute Care training is preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:  Current licensure/eligibility as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the state of South Carolina or as a Physician Assistant by the NCCPA and Board of Medical Examiners required.  South Carolina Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant DEA certificate to prescribe from the State Medical/Nursing Board will also be required.

Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications from the American Heart Association must be kept current.

Degree of Supervision: APP will be supervised/collaborate with a board-certified Anesthesiologist specialty trained in Critical Care Medicine.

Physical Requirements: Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.  Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors.  Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs.   Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
