The Hollings Cancer Center infusion suite is an outpatient clinic consisting of 44 chairs. The infusion suite provides comprehensive care to patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy, blood products, and biological agents. As a National Cancer Institute, we also provide comprehensive care to patients enrolled in clinical trials. 32 chairs are dedicated to solid tumor patients, including patients from other specialty areas (i.e. neurology, rheumatology, pulmonology); 10 chairs are dedicated to patients undergoing bone marrow transplant, and 2 chairs are dedicated to patients requiring central line access prior to physician and infusion appointments. The outpatient infusion suite is open Monday through Friday from 7am until 6pm; Saturday and Sunday from 8am until 12pm. Given the specialty of populations in our care, the Hollings Cancer Center infusion suite requires nurses to be chemotherapy/biotherapy certified by the Oncology Nursing Society. Upon employment, there are multiple opportunities for nurses to obtain specialty certification in a number of areas to include oncology, bone marrow transplant, and palliative care. The Oncology Financial Coordinator reports to the Business Manager of the Oncology Service Line. Under limited supervision, the Oncology Financial Coordinator reviews unfunded accounts to determine eligibility for sponsorship by available agencies, discusses coverage issues with patient and/or family and communicates with insurance case managers to ascertain proper authorizations and pre-certifications in accordance with objectives, established standards, policies and procedures. This position serves as a paraprofessional member of the Oncology team, patient advocate, and liaison between internal and external entities.

7 West Surgical Oncology is a high acuity 24 bed adult inpatient unit specializing in gynecology oncology, head/neck oncology and head/neck benign patients. 7 West also provides care for a variety of other medical/surgical patient populations including but not limited to management of behavioral, respiratory, endocrine, GI, and trauma patients. The unit manages patients receiving inpatient chemotherapy, radiation, leech therapy, total parenteral nutrition and enteral nutrition. This unit cares for complex microvascular head and neck flap patients which includes complex wound management, tracheostomy and laryngectomy patient care. The unit also manages palliative and hospice patient populations at varying stages of their disease progression to include aggressive pain management. Because of the diversity of populations cared for in this unit, once hired 7 West encourages and offers opportunities for their nurses to obtain specialty certification in a number of areas to include oncology, head and neck, med/surg, and palliative care. Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse I (New Graduate) assists at the advanced beginner level in providing individualized, goal directed nursing care to patients and families utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process; interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes.

The Unit Secretary reports to the Nurse Manager. Under indirect supervision, the Unit Secretary handles all incoming and outgoing communications and is responsible for accurately performing all clerical duties for the clinical unit. This position processes physicians’ orders, maintains unit charts, records, supplies and equipment. This role is the direct line of communication between the patient care unit and support services. The Unit Secretary also assists in orienting and training new personnel.
