Job Summary:

Responsible for the protection of life and property through enforcement of applicable state, federal and local laws.

Responsible for the prevention, detection and investigation of crimes, maintaining order, enforcement of traffic regulations, accident, criminal and other investigations.

Supervision of all sworn and non-sworn personnel.

Performs a variety of complex administrative, supervisory and professional work in planning, coordinating and directing the activities of the police department.

Involvement of work contains elements of personal danger.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

1. Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) from four-year college or university: or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
2. Ten years of experience in law enforcement with a minimum of five years at a supervisory level.
3. Graduate from a supervisor program such as School of Police Staff and Command, Supervision of Police Personnel, or similar.
4. Experience in policy development, personnel, and training.
5. Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action.
6. Must have ability to prepare clear and comprehensive written reports.
7. Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
8. Be able to receive and handle confidential submissions, records, and data with utmost integrity.
9. Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of modern police administration including the supervisor’s role as a manager of subordinates.
10. Requires ability and skills necessary to operate a variety of police vehicles and equipment during both normal and emergency conditions in a safe and cautious manner.
11. Possess physical coordination, strength, and ability sufficient to meet strenuous police duty requirements.
12. Maintain mandatory annual firearms certification as required by Illinois Public Act 94-103.
13. Certification by the Illinois Local Governmental Law enforcement Officer’s Training Board.
14. Acquire and maintain LEADS and AED/CPR certification.

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

 

Essential Duties:

1. Assist in supervising the day to day operation of the ECC Police Department personal. Supervise all operations of the Police department, including development of educational programs to enhance awareness of campus crime and safety.
2. Assist and share the responsibility of ensuring that the application of modern techniques and procedures in security programs are in use at Elgin Community College.
3. Supervise all vehicle maintenance and operations for the Police Department.
4. Develop, coordinate, and direct all training for department personnel for compliance with the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board as well as employee growth.
5. Supervise and direct patrol activities, manage follow up investigations, approve reports, and prepare and deliver performance evaluations. Participate and make recommendations for hiring and conduct internal investigations as needed and make recommendations for discipline.

Other Duties:

1. Perform other duties as assigned by the chief of police.
2. Serve as acting deputy chief of police as needed.
