Department Overview:

We are looking for motivated undergraduate students who want to work in a corn breeding program. Activities are mostly carried out in the field, on experimental farms located in West Madison.

Minimum: 15 Maximum: 30

Schedule:

We'll meet at Moore Hall, and from there we'll head to Verona (West Madison Agricultural Research Station, which is 20 minutes
from campus) in a Fleet van. The time spent commuting is counted as time worked.
We need students who have long class breaks (i.e., available all morning, all afternoon, or all day). Each day, we go in groups of 4 to 6 people.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

$17.00

Qualifications:

Availability for fieldwork in corn seed production fields. Preference will be given to students with greater availability of time between classes and attending courses related to agriculture & livestock or biology in general.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The candidates must enjoy working outdoors and be very organized and careful with data collection for scientific purposes.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Help collecting data on corn crops for breeding purposes. Also, help with harvesting corn fields. Training will be provided for the assessments to be made on the corn plants.

Physical Demands:

The corn phenotyping process requires us to bend down and stand up several times in order to collect data on the roots and aerial parts of the plants.
