Position Overview

Sociology is the study of society, social change, and the forces, conflicts, and causes that favour or hamper the possibility of social transformation. Why have some people more access to healthcare, education, rights, safety than others? The answer is in the scholarly study of the structures that shape the lives of individuals and communities: race, gender, class, culture, privilege, control, and wealth, among others. Deakin Sociology features an excellent blend of expertise combining empirical and theoretical research at the local, national and international level. Our group works in areas as different as youth, migration, sexuality, religion, health, sport, AI, biomedicine, multiculturalism, and theory. Deakin sociologists are active social researchers with strong national and international networks and expertise in a variety of methodologies. These include digital and traditional ethnographies, visual methods, in-depth interviews, focus groups, survey research, theoretical and historical methods and experimental design in sociological research. Through one or a combination of these methods our vibrant group aim to enrich our understanding of social life and make society a better place to live in.
