Job Description

The Research Scientist will conduct original research in the areas including, but not limited to, (1) deposition of surface dielectric and/or thermionic layers on UHTC surfaces, (2) optimize work function for warm electron emission and control surface electronegativity, (3) assist in laboratory test method for characterization of E.T.-cooling and demonstration of E.T.-cooling phenomena, and (4) assist in multilayer structure development of capacitors for high temperature applications. The research scientist will support the supervisor in existing projects, laboratory management and operation of equipment over which the supervisor has responsibility. The research scientist may also be assigned to assist graduate and undergraduate students as needed. The aforementioned research will be conducted primarily in the laboratory facilities of Drs. Dwight Viehland and Jie-Fang Li in the Materials Science and Engineering department at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The research scientist is expected to disseminate results from research efforts through contract reports, peer-reviewed journal publications and conference presentations.

Required Qualifications

The research scientist shall have a Ph.D. in Electronics or Materials Science and Engineering with expertise areas such as deposition of thin layers on substrate, chemical and solution processing, electrical characterization methods, and use of electric fields to control properties. Skill in operating test equipment is necessary. The candidate should have demonstrated creativity, independence, high motivation, and suitable communication skills, both orally and written. Strong work habits and the ability to work independently as well as within a research group are required. The candidate should have several years work experience in the area of electrical properties of materials and thin layer deposition with demonstrated experience in developing and conducting original research, and the versatility to work in various research areas.

58,000 - 62,500
