The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in the areas of hardware security and applications of deep learning in security analysis of embedded systems. The successful candidate will perform research in the area hardware security and security assessment techniques using deep learning, and develop deep learning methodologies for security assessment of embedded systems. Major themes of research include side-channel analysis using power and EM measurements with supervised and unsupervised learning techniques, application of deep learning in enabling and improving efficiency of fault attacks under simple adversary models, and finding countermeasures at different levels of circuit, architecture and algorithm. The candidate will support group work in the general area of signatures analysis of FPGA and embedded platforms, and may exercise functional supervision over supporting undergraduate and graduate researchers.
Applicants must have a PhD by the start date of the position in electrical engineering, computer engineering or computer science. Knowledge and experience in side-channel analysis, including power or fault injection attacks, or anomaly detection such Trojans or malware on FPGA, ASIC, or embedded microprocessors is required. In addition, understanding of different machine learning and deep learning algorithms for processing time-series signals and time sequences is necessary.
The preferred candidate will have strong background and experience in unsupervised learning and algorithms for learning with limited training sets. Knowledge and experience in the following areas are highly desirable:
- Digital design experience in FPGA or ASIC using VHDL or Verilog, including cryptographic applications.
- Understanding different types of fault attacks, including statistical and differential analysis, and the corresponding physical mechanisms allowing fault attacks on different hardware platforms.
- Understanding different types of countermeasures against side-channel analysis, including masking and private circuits, application of MACs against differential fault attacks, circuit level provisions against the attacks, and the underlying trade-offs and vulnerabilities of the countermeasures against different types of attacks.
