Job Description

Head Spirit Coach for Virginia Tech Athletics. Virginia Tech is an NCAA Division I institution and member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). This position reports to the Associate Athletics Director for Marketing.
The Head Spirit Coach will coordinate all aspects of the Virginia Tech Spirit Program (cheerleaders, dance team, and mascot), including student athlete development and academic progress, home (and away for football) game coordination, organizing and leading practices and workouts, and budget management. Will serve as primary liaison to the National Cheerleaders Association.
Directs and manages the HokieBird mascot for athletic events, mascot program operations, as well as scheduling appearance events both on and off campus.
Oversees 60+ spirit squad members and 2-3 part-time spirit assistant coaches.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree and/or bachelor's degree with experience as a collegiate cheerleader and/or cheerleader coach, or dance team member and/or dance team coach.
Exemplary communication and public relations skills.
Demonstrated participation in a successful cheerleading/dance program.
Ability to prepare and conduct training for student athletes.
Skill in the assessment and recruitment of prospective student athletes.
Budgeting and fundraising experience.
Proven integrity and leadership.
Candidate should possess a strong commitment and ability to motivate, teach, counsel, and recruit academically and athletically qualified student athletes.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of general university policies and procedures.
Experience working with the Universal Cheerleaders/Dance Association, National Cheerleaders/Dance Association, Varsity, or similar program.
Certification with the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators.
Strong background of teaching different areas of dance including pom, modern dance, jazz and hip hop.
Ability to spot stunts and tumbling.

Commensurate with experience.
