The Ted and Karyn Hume Center for National Security and Technology at Virginia Tech is seeking an Associate Director for their Intelligent Systems Lab (ISL). The Associate Director (AD) is a member of Hume Center leadership and is responsible for leading research programs and planning future strategic directions for the Lab. In coordination with the Director of ISL, the AD will be responsible for broadening the research portfolio, establishing relationships with potential sponsors and Virginia Tech faculty members, and mentoring researchers in the Lab. The Intelligent Systems Lab (ISL) is a fast-growing research lab located primarily at the Virginia Tech Research Center in Arlington, VA that houses research faculty and associates, program managers, and staff.
The Hume Center for National Security and Technology’s mission is to cultivate the next generation of national security leaders by developing and executing research and experiential learning opportunities to engage students. The AD will develop strategic initiatives for student engagement in Arlington, VA to include experiential learning activities, summer programs, and distance collaborations with students in Blacksburg. At large, the Hume Center education programs engage students through experiential learning, scholarships, and internship and career opportunities in the national security sector. Research programs support graduate assistantships through sponsored research with defense and intelligence organizations. The core mission of the Hume Center is student-focused. Research activities support the student ecosystem, and as such all research activities include student participation.
The successful candidate for the ISL Associate Director position will help expand the labs research portfolio in one or more of the following areas: data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, systems engineering, and the evaluation of technologies and systems. A successful candidate should have experience in the role of PI or Co-PI on research funded projects and an ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines. The successful candidate will also proactively work to establish new relationships with the relevant departments at Virginia Tech and collaborate on projects with faculty spanning a variety of disciplines. The candidate should have experience managing groups. This position will lead research groups that can include faculty, students, and staff. They will also assist the Director of ISL in leadership of the lab and help shape future strategic directions for the Lab.
The Intelligent Systems Lab with the Hume Center leverages technologies within cyber-physical systems, data science, systems engineering, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to address critical areas of national security. Being located primarily in Arlington, VA, ISL is in proximity to work with both federal government and private sector companies to accomplish their research in these national security focused areas. ISL also works collaboratively with the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI), whose mission is to build an ecosystem of research, innovation, commercialization, and learning to establish Virginia as a world leader in cybersecurity. CCI’s Northern Virginia hub is located within the same building as ISL, which makes collaboration easy and strengthens the mission of both organizations.
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Systems Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Psychology or a closely related field or commensurate experience;
- demonstrated excellence in research or evidence of high potential for such excellence;
- prior experience in the role of PI or Co-PI on funded research projects;
- ability to articulate a coherent agenda of research or scholarship and to identify potential funding sources to support such research activities;
- the ability to develop long term strategic research plans;
- interest or experience in mentoring students, both undergraduate or graduate, in research;
- interest or experience working effectively with a diverse student population;
- strong communication skills;
- Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI Clearance.
- Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines;
- experience in working with students including overseeing student internships or service-learning activities;
- experience directing large scale projects/programs.

Based on the credentials of the successful candidates, offer may be made at the research faculty rank of either research assistant professor, research associate professor, or research professor.
