The College of Science at Virginia Tech (www.science.vt.edu) seeks applicants for an Open Rank Collegiate Faculty (non tenure-track) position. This new faculty member will play a central role in developing, coordinating, and delivering a new undergraduate biomedical education track that is part of a larger coordinated education and research program that will be launched on the Virginia Tech Health Science and Technology campus located in Roanoke, VA. This new program is designed for rising junior and senior undergraduate students, initially those majoring in life sciences within the College of Science (e.g., Biological Sciences, Nanomedicine, Neuroscience) who are pursuing careers in biomedical research and/or health professions. The program’s research and educational activities will be primarily situated within the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute (https://fbri.vtc.vt.edu/) and Virginia Tech Health Science and Technology Campus in Roanoke VA.
The Collegiate Faculty position is a non-tenure position with ranks at the Assistant, Associate, and Full Collegiate Professor levels that offer 3-, 5-, and 7-year renewable appointments, respectively. This position offers a clear path to promotion with increasingly longer contracts and promotion criteria clearly defined by College of Science and University guidelines. The successful candidate for this position will primarily focus on creating, delivering, and overseeing innovative experiential learning and undergraduate courses with a biomedical and health sciences focus on the Virginia Tech Health Science and Technology Campus in Roanoke. A substantial portion of the Collegiate Faculty position will be dedicated to the creation, delivery, and oversight of core courses in the program curriculum, as well as the opportunity to develop unique courses based on the applicant's specific areas of expertise.
Responsibilities of this Collegiate Faculty position will include (1) coordinating undergraduate research experiences with the Office of the Vice President for Health Sciences and Technology and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute; (2) curriculum development; (3) teaching and/or overseeing courses in the undergraduate biomedical research program. Teaching areas will include one or two areas of biomedical science that will be emphasized in the program curriculum, such as molecular biology, infectious disease, immunology, cell biology, physiology, and neurobiology. Additional coursework will cultivate scientific communication, ethics, experimental design and/or biostatistics. Successful applicants will also have the opportunity to develop innovative elective courses that are pertinent to objectives of the undergraduate biomedical research program curriculum. The search committee will consider applicants across career stages and the rank of the successful candidate will be commensurate with experience.
A successful candidate for this position will have a Ph.D. in biological sciences or neuroscience/neurobiology or related biomedical discipline and will be passionate about teaching undergraduate students in an inclusive and integrated environment.
Desirable characteristics we seek include a record of pedagogical achievement and vision, creativity, and leadership skills relevant to instruction. In addition, we seek candidates with broad training in biomedical science, and more specifically in biological sciences, neuroscience, and/or a closely related field. Area of specific expertise within these domains is open. It is preferable that the candidate has experience in organizing, coordinating, and executing some type of biomedical-science related experience for undergraduates (e.g., outreach workshop; Research Experiences for Undergraduates).
