The Virginia Tech School of Architecture + Design of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor(s) in Industrial Design as a part of the School of Architecture + Design for Fall 2023.
Ideal candidates will have the capacity to teach core professional skills in industrial design; problem solving and integration; ethical and sustainable design practices; and a breadth of topics valuable in an industrial design laboratory course.
As an Assistant or Associate Professor, this tenure track position will require a commitment to teaching, service, and research that develops the school, college, and university expectations and strategic growth areas. Programmatic goals include a focus on sustainability, humanity, and well considered technology. In this search we seek to diversify perspectives on the products, systems, and services that will define our global future and environment.
Applicants must specifically address the ongoing opening up of the definition of industrial design away from a focus purely on the production of objects and towards an understanding of the manner in which its knowledge and skills can contribute to a more sustainable, equitable, and beautiful human-made environment. In particular, faculty needs to expand the program’s ability to embed industrial design both in a wider material and visual culture and to understand the diverse social communities it serves. Successful candidates will have clear positions on the developing nature of design, the way in which we educate designers, and how to professionally manifest compassionate, humble, and effective designs.
The integration of the candidate's work with the School’s experimental tradition in design, cross-disciplinary, and hands-on teaching is essential. This position will require the capacity to work in diverse teaching environments and across domains of design. Faculty on this track will have the opportunity to shape research initiatives that expand the Industrial Design program, influence the profession and university through service, and develop high impact design practices in the classroom that empower the next generation of designers.
The School is especially eager to attract diverse faculty with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. We are on a quest to build a program that accelerates university education towards practices accessible to everyone, that proactively makes meaningful impacts and contributions to well-being, and that brings beauty and delight to our everyday lives. As a large program, we have a responsibility and opportunity to make a difference in our profession. People of all backgrounds will be welcomed here.
We are looking for people committed to diversifying the profession, willing to contribute their experiences to enrich the campus community life, and who want to work with us to design an education that prepares our students to be active contributors in making the world better.
A terminal degree in Industrial Design or a related field, by appointment start date.
Established teaching or professional experience.
A proven ability and achievements in inclusive and sustainable product, system, or service design.
A record of publication, exhibition, awards, and/or production in the field.
Complete applications will include the following:
1) A cover letter addressing the applicants qualifications in teaching, research, and service
2) Curriculum Vitae
3) A design portfolio
4) A one page personal diversity statement addressing how your research, teaching, and/or service has prepared you to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education or the profession
5) The names and contact information for three current references as attachments to the online application

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
