Job Description

The primary objective of this position is to support aquaculture at the Virginia Seafood Agricultural Research and Extension Center (VSAREC). The person will assist in keeping all aquaculture systems in proper operating condition and performing appropriate preventative and routine equipment maintenance. The person will also assist in keeping all research, outreach, and training areas clean, organized, and ready to receive outside visitors, trainees, and interns at any time. The person will assist other aquaculture personnel in conducting aquaculture trials, data collection, development of training materials, conducting training of interns, as well as, assisting with public outreach/education programs.

Required Qualifications

B.S. in Biology, or Environmental Science or equivalent experience in the field of sciences. Experience in maintaining aquaculture recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) in working order. Experience with fish culture, and a basic understanding of the principles of aquaculture. Ability to work with and train Interns, students, and provide outreach programs to the public. Must be willing to work occasional weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with food finfish species: Trout, Hybrid Striped Bass, pompano, or others. Experience with marine ornamental shrimp and invertebrates, and ornamental fish; clownfish, damselfish, or other species. Experience with aquaponics. Experience training groups, interns, public speaking. Experience with shellfish culture. Experience with live algae culture.
