Position Summary:

The Communication and Marketing Specialist will play a pivotal role in executing the communication and marketing strategies for the School of Communication. This position is responsible for creating and disseminating content that enhances the School’s brand, engages key publics, and supports student recruitment and retention efforts. The specialist will also oversee alumni relations and manage digital and print publications.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Communication Strategy Execution:
    • Identify story ideas, gather and prepare information, and generate content related to School of Communication activities, faculty members, students, and alumni.
    • Build engagement with and brand awareness among key publics.
    • Support student recruitment and retention efforts.
  2. Marketing Strategy Execution:
    • Design advertising and promotional materials and visuals for school initiatives and recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students.
    • Create brand awareness through digital marketing and communication materials that promote a compelling brand for the School of Communication.
  3. Alumni Relations:
    • Oversee alumni relations with scheduled alumni newsletters and targeted outreach through social media postings.
    • Coordinate the School of Communication Giving Day campaign.
    • Plan digital strategy to drive continuous, loyal support from alumni and friends for the School’s Annual Fund.
    • Collaborate with the college’s director of alumni relations for outreach efforts.
  4. Content Creation and Management:
    • Post regular content (written, graphics, video, etc.) on social networks.
    • Work with the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences Office of Marketing and Communication director to develop communication goals for the School.
    • Support college initiatives, administer school web content, and attend communicator meetings.
    • Stay current with technology, digital publishing tools, and social media and analytics/measurement trends to provide recommendations for communication and marketing strategy and implementation.
  5. Publication and Media Relations:
    • Manage production for print and online publications and promotional materials.
    • Draft news releases for college and university news pages.
    • Work with Virginia Tech media relations and the college’s director of communications and marketing to pitch news stories to journalists.
    • Keep the School of Communication website updated through a content management system.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, public relations or related field and/or relevant experience.
• Record of excellence in written communication
• Writing experience for all media platforms
• Established social networking expertise
• Production and editing experience in visual communication (photography, graphics, video)

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in communication, journalism, public relations or related field.
• Experience in university-related public relations
• Professional accreditation/certification in public relations
• Knowledge of Virginia Tech and its School of Communication
