Job Description

The Virginia Tech Catawba Sustainability Center, a 377-acre farm property located in Virginia’s Catawba Valley that focuses on sustainable practices in agriculture, forestry, and land management, needs a part time Agriculture Technician to aid the Catawba Sustainability Center farm manager in general work to support the facility throughout the year. Duties required by the technician include support of the facility’s agricultural operation primarily with grass-fed beef cattle, maintenance of research and demonstration plots, workshop coordination, property maintenance, maintaining the Center’s social media presence, project coordination and any other general task requested by the CSC manager. This position will be operating university owned farm equipment and must have a valid driver's license. This position requires the ability to perform manual labor, work outside in variable weather conditions and lift in excess of 50 lbs. This position will also require weekend responsibilities in support of operations and initiatives of the center.

Required Qualifications

Experience working on an agriculture farm performing general property and plot maintenance
Experience operating farm equipment/machinery such as a tractor and/or zero turn lawnmower
Knowledge and/or experience of basic agricultural practices
Experience with social media outlets, Microsoft office suite, and geographical information systems

Preferred Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, forestry, or related field
A general understanding of agroforestry practices, and regenerative agriculture, especially related to adaptive grazing of grass finished beef

Salary Information

$18/hour

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction and driving check and must have a safe driving record.
