Job Description

Network Infrastructure and Services (NI&S) is part of the Division of Information Technology at Virginia Tech. We provide advanced network, communications, public safety, and data center services. We design, deploy, and operate enterprise-scale, high-performance computing and communications networks. NI&S is a dynamic and exciting organization committed to continuous improvement and is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated person to fill this role.

Reporting to the Director of Architecture and Design, the Solutions Architect position is vital to ensuring the robust design and successful implementation of complex computing systems in support of NI&S and Virginia Tech information technology initiatives. The successful candidate will have a strong technical background with a demonstrated ability to lead end-to-end computing design efforts, including architecting key elements of the solution, evaluating technical options, and leading cross-functional teams towards a final solution while keeping all of the organization’s key stakeholders apprised. This person will possess the technical understanding and astuteness to analyze requests quickly, identify pivotal technical elements, and work with cross-functional teams and our partners to craft winning solutions. The architect will bring a solutions-oriented perspective with the agility and insight to explore and evaluate multiple solutions options while ensuring progress towards identified goals. This person will be adept at connecting people (from individuals up through departments) who may otherwise operate in isolation and enabling personnel to look at the solution as a whole to measure alignment to business processes and standards. In addition, this role will be responsible for translating program/project strategies and business goals into detailed requirements, designing and driving the development of solutions to meet customer and business needs, and scoping and prioritizing activities based on business and customer impact.

As a Solutions Architect, you will have an opportunity to lead the development of solutions to meet business objectives by:

● Working with customers and stakeholders in the design and development of solutions to solve critical business challenges
● Working as part of an Agile development team to quickly prototype solutions and develop new technical competencies
● Developing metric collection strategies and standards to ensure high-quality data collection from deployed technology solutions
● Preparing analytical reports, demonstrations, and making technology recommendations
● Analyzing the security of network, systems, and data and making strategic recommendations
● Driving the development of innovative solutions to solve complex challenges across technical domains

Required Qualifications

● Master’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, STEM, or a related field or bachelor's degree with equivalent work experience to a master's degree
● Significant experience working directly with customers on building complex technical solutions to solve business challenges in production environments
● Significant experience leveraging solutions in AWS, Azure, or other public cloud environments for production workloads
● Experience designing metrics and monitoring to address the need for technology to inform the business process
● Significant experience leveraging CI/CD and automation in production environments
● Significant experience developing architecture diagrams of complex technical solutions
● Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across internal and external organizations and virtual teams
● Experience using infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform, or CloudFormation

Preferred Qualifications

● Significant experience leveraging Kubernetes for production solutions
● Experience developing solutions in low code environments like Appian
● Experience developing solutions in Python, Java, or equivalent
● Significant experience working with customers to build a rapid proof of concepts to determine the feasibility of solutions
● Experience leading cross-functional development teams and initiatives
● Experience managing projects, planning projects, drafting and organizing project documentation, identifying and documenting risks, issues, and dependencies
