The Public Safety Division at Virginia Tech, composed of the Police Department, Environmental Health & Safety, Emergency Management, and the VT Rescue Squad, has a critical role in supporting the well-being of our community. We are essential in planning for and responding to emergency events, and in creating a culture of preparedness where employees and students are safe in their work and living environments.
Formally reporting to the Virginia Tech Chief of Police and informally to the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad (VTRS) Chief, the VTRS Pharmacy and Quality Assurance Administrator is responsible for managing the VTRS pharmacy program, leading the VTRS Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement program and committee, managing squad training records and compliance, and assisting squad leadership in daily operations to provide Emergency Medical Services to the Virginia Tech community. As the only paid position on the VTRS, the VTRS Pharmacy and Quality Assurance Administrator shall assist the squad volunteers in maintaining many of the operational support programs and systems needed to provide ALS EMS services at all times. This incumbent will regularly interact with VT students and should aim to fulfill the educational mission of the VTRS in addition to their regular duties by mentoring and instructing VTRS volunteers in their EMS careers.
The incumbent also performs other duties as requested; takes initiative to support a healthy work environment; strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Business Conduct; exemplifies the Virginia Tech Principles of Community; and supports the university’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).
Education and Certifications
* Virginia Paramedic license
* Willingness to be the Responsible Party for a Virginia Controlled Substances Registration (CSR) and Drug Enforcement Administration Registration for class 2-6 medication storage
Experience
* Significant experience in Emergency Medical Services
* Experience writing and updating EMS pharmacy procedures
* Experience writing EMS patient care reports (PCRs) or similar documents.
* Experience reviewing PCRs and EMS provider actions for Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement
* Experience working with the public.
* Demonstrated computer experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Availability to work outside of normal working hours
* Strong writing and interpersonal communication skills
* Ability to formally and informally counsel EMS professionals
* Ability to work with a culturally diverse department and the university community.
* Ability to use independent judgment and exercise considerable restraint under stressful situations.
* Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
Physical Fitness
* Ability to perform strenuous physical activities.
* Ability to run, jump, climb stairs, bend, and lift.
Pre-Employment and Ongoing Employee Screening
* Candidates for employment are required to successfully complete an extensive background check and credit history check, with satisfactory results. This includes, but is not limited to, a driving records check, criminal history check (including fingerprinting), and a pre-employment drug screening.
* Incumbents are subject to random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident drug and alcohol screening in accordance with department policy.
* Membership (Active, Associate, or Life) with the VT Rescue Squad
* Significant experience as a paramedic in the WVEMS region
* Undergraduate Degree
* VA EMS education coordinator or willingness to obtain within 1.5 years
The selected finalist will be required to successfully complete an extensive criminal background and driving records check.
