Summary of Position: The Sports Communication program offers three degree levels: Bachelor of Science, Minor and Certificate. The program is rooted and housed in the Communication discipline with one required emphasis area selected from the following: Social Media and Digital Communication, Multimedia Journalism, Integrated Marketing Techniques, Event Management, or Sports Sciences. Majors may also select the Management and Leadership concentration within the Sports Communication major. All majors complete an additional Academic Minor to enhance their versatility. These interdisciplinary career pathways include collaborations with programs in four Colleges at Ferris State University.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach a 4-4 load of classes and direct internships or practicum/research projects. Required courses include Communication in Sports Organizations, (project-based) Sports Communication and Seminar in Sports Communication; and other Communication courses, ranging from General Education service courses in Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Decision Making, Intercultural Communication, Diversity and Communication. The candidate will be encouraged to develop courses within their area of expertise.

As Sports Communication "champion," the candidate will participate in recruitment activities, advise students, coordinate programmatic-related activities, and collaborate with campus and community partners.

The start date for this position is August 2023.

Required Education: ABD status in a doctoral program of Communication, Sports Communication or related field.
Must confer doctoral degree no later than Aug. 1, 2023, as evidenced by official transcripts.
 
Required Work Experience: • Demonstrated teaching experience teaching courses in Sports Communication
• Demonstrated teaching experience teaching one or more of our general education communication courses: Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Communication

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: PHD in Communication, Sports Communication or related field.
Experience in sports and/or relevant industries
 
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: • Teach courses in Sports Communication
• Teach one or more of these General Education Communication courses: Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Communication
• Develop courses in the area of the candidate's expertise
• Participate in recruitment activities
• Advise students
• Coordinate programmatic-related activities
• Collaborate with campus and community partners
• Faculty members also have professional responsibilities which may include advising students, orientation and registration of students, participation in University committees, keeping regular posted office hours (which are scheduled at times convenient for students), and participation in traditional functions which have academic significance (ex. reporting initial student participation data and submitting final grades on time). Faculty members may be required to teach off-campus or in an on-line environment.
