Department Summary & Job Purpose:
The Brennan lab is hiring a postdoctoral scientist to work on a newly funded NSF Career project studying coevolution of snake genitalia using a variety of morphological, biomechanical, and comparative approaches to understand the evolution of the incredibly diverse morphology of female and male genitalia in snakes.
Core Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collecting and dissecting snakes to collect their genitalia, produce 3-D models, and perform statistical analyses of shape that include comparative approaches. Collecting biomaterial data on vagina properties in a comparative framework, and performing histology. Co-teaching Vertebrate Anatomy with the PI (Patty Brennan) in the Fall 2022 and 23, and then teaching independently in Fall ‘24. . Mentoring undergraduate student research.
Qualifications: Successful applicants will have a Ph.D. in evolution, biology, or a related field, demonstrable quantitative skills, strong writing skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and a strong record of, and interest in undergraduate mentorship and outreach. Excellent quantitative skills, expertise in the use of R, and general comparative statistical methods are required.
Preferred Qualifications: We seek applicants who are committed to DEI, who are passionate about mentoring a diverse undergraduate body, and who want to gain teaching experience while performing ground-breaking research. Our lab is committed to increasing representation of PoC in undergraduate research at our institution. Interest in becoming involved in outreach efforts by participating in the creation of a Podcast with lab members is a plus, but any alternative or additional outreach efforts will be supported.
Physical Demands: Physical activity would be medium work, requires stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, pushing, lifting, grasping, feeling.
Employee will operate computers, small equipment, visual acuity will be required to perform dissection and edit models in computers.
Working Conditions: Employee works in laboratory environments with a wide range of hazardous materials.
