Department Summary & Job Purpose:

Mount Holyoke College seeks a 10 month, full-time assistant track and field and cross country coach. The assistant coach will be responsible for assisting the head coach with the organization, development, and daily function of the NCAA Division III programs competing in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference. This individual will assist the head coach in performing all duties to enhance and further develop competitiveness within the programs in compliance with all rules and regulations.

Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following functions:

Assistant Track and Field and Cross Country Coach (80%)
1. Support the head coach in developing and implementing strategies to successfully recruit, yield, mentor, and retain a diverse group of academically and athletically talented student-athletes.
2. Coach specific event student-athletes in event groups as assigned (e.g. sprints, jumps, throws), in both team and individual settings.
3. Assist the head coach in all aspects of running competitive collegiate cross country and track and field programs.
4. Organize and manage training programs for assigned event groups including creating and conducting training plans for assigned event groups.
5. Attend and support team needs at all practices and contests and specifically for assigned event groups.
6. Create a team environment which allows all student-athletes to grow and develop as students, as athletes, as leaders, and as individuals.
7. Promote a culture of health, well-being, and safety in all aspects of the intercollegiate varsity cross country and track and field teams.
8. Assist with the organizing, planning, and marketing for the annual MHC Lyons Showcase outdoor track and field meet including developing home meet information and schedule as well as communicating with officials, the timing company, and visiting teams’ coaches.
9. Assist with planning practice/meet day itineraries, as needed.
10. Support non-competition events as assigned by the head coach including community service, fundraising, and alumnae events.

Transportation and Contest Meal Coordinator (15%)
1. Oversee and schedule all team transportation including reserving buses and vans, as needed.
2. Serve as the contact and liaison with MHC fleet and the Department’s outsourced bus company.
3. Serve as the contact and liaison with MHC Dining Serves to coordinate to-go meal pick-up times for teams when they’re traveling for competition.
4. Work with coaches and other department members to ensure proper coordination of departure and to-go meal times.

Other Duties (5%)
1. Participate on Department and College committees as assigned.
2. Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications: The position requires a Bachelor’s degree; a valid driver’s license; previous collegiate experience whether it be coaching or competing, and/or success as a head coach at the high school level; excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to efficiently and effectively carry tasks out to completion; and the ability to function effectively at a competitive liberal arts NCAA Division III college with highly selective academic standards.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience coaching within a collegiate cross country and/or track and field program as well as a demonstrated ability to recruit and yield high-academic student-athletes is preferred.

License/Certifications: Valid Driver's License

Compliance Requirements: All department employees are required to demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations; the duties of the position are to be performed in compliance with all NCAA, Conference and College rules and regulations; and any rules violations on behalf of themselves or any knowledge of violations within the department are to be reported to the appropriate parties. Annually, all department employees must successfully complete the NCAA Division III rules test and athletics staff sexual violence prevention training.

Physical Demands: 

  1. Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/ or leg control requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated as light work.
  2. Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  3. Sufficient clarity of speech required includes those which permit the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
  4. Employee speaks with students and other faculty daily by telephone, e-mail, or in person on a daily basis.
  5. Visual Acuity including color, depth perception and field vision.
  6. Employee operates office equipment and computers to perform essential duties and responsibilities.

Working Conditions: Regular evening and weekend hours are involved and the ability to travel is required.
