Department Summary & Job Purpose:

The Physics Department at Mount Holyoke is small and thriving. The five professors and the lab director, along with support from the physics technician and department coordinator, support coursework and activities for all our students, and we graduate 10 - 18 majors each year. We pride ourselves on providing opportunities for students to engage with potentially publishable research as early as their first year. Mount Holyoke is an undergraduate liberal arts college for women with 2,200 students and 220 faculty. We are located about 80 miles west of Boston in the Connecticut River valley and are a member of the Five College consortium consisting of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

The Department of Physics and the Science Center at Mount Holyoke College seek a technician to work 37.5 hours per week throughout the year. This person will support the research and instructional needs of the Physics department focused on the repair, maintenance, organization, and design of equipment for classroom demonstrations, instructional labs, and research labs. In addition, this person will perform similar instrumentation and design tasks for other STEM departments and the makerspace. They will also teach a survey course in the Science Center machine shop each semester. We anticipate that ⅔ of the work will directly support the needs of the physics department, and ⅓ will be more broadly spread across the Science Center and makerspace. We seek a motivated and collaborative individual who can work independently and learn new skills quickly. The ideal candidate will have at least a Bachelor’s degree in physics or engineering (or a related field), though consideration will be given to any candidate with relevant technical experience regardless of degree. Pay will be commensurate with degree level and/or years of experience.

The Technician Will:

• Coordinate with faculty on classroom demonstrations (e.g. organizing, preparing for class, maintaining a database)
• Repair instrumentation for instructional and research labs
• Assist in maintaining research labs (e.g. water chiller, nitrogen supply, pumps)
• Coordinate with the machinist and perform machining tasks (requested by department or individual faculty) when appropriate
• Maintain instructional computers
• Purchase and organize supplies and equipment
• Teach the department's 1-credit machine shop course
• Assist student researchers with designing experimental apparatus; teach them how to machine and assemble necessary components

Qualifications: 

• At least a Bachelor’s degree in physics or engineering (or a related field)
• Relevant technical experience
• Ability to interact professionally with a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students.
• Strong human relations and interpersonal skills to maintain effective, professional, and cooperative working relationships with supervisors and coworkers
• Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively, as well as independently
• Ability to prioritize work duties and demonstrate effective time management skills.
• Accuracy and attention to detail.
• Experience fixing electronic equipment
• Experience machining (mills, lathe, etc.)
• CAD experience and design skills
• Knowledge (or willingness to learn) modern “maker” techniques such as laser cutting, 3D printing, water jet cutting

Physical Demands: 

• Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
• Standing: Particularly for sustained periods.
• Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
• Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas utilizing the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
• Sufficient clarity of speech required includes those, which permit the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively in person and by telephone.

Working Conditions: 

• The employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in a typical office or administrative work).
• Proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding, and high places.
• Employee works in laboratory environments with a wide range of hazardous materials.
