Job Description:

The Assistant Dean, Law Admissions and First-Year Students is a key member of the Admissions team and is involved in all aspects of admissions and outreach operations. The Assistant Dean, Law Admissions and First-Year Students is responsible for all administrative aspects of the JD application process. This role is responsible for ensuring that admissions, recruitment, outreach, and matriculation events are effective and consistent with the mission of the law school and the University.
The Assistant Dean, Law Admissions and First-Year Students works in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Students and Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, to ensure the highest quality experience for 1st year law students. This will include, but is not limited to, providing vision, direction, and strategic leadership to facilitate first-year law students’ growth, wellness, and overall professional development through programs and services that boost and enhance the mission and strategic directions of the University.

Principal Responsibilities of the position include:

-Plan, direct, and manage all matters regarding the recruitment, advising, and retention of law school applicants in support of the College of Law’s enrollment management goals and the vision of the university. This can include but is not limited to:
• Attend law fairs, law school forums, and other undergraduate college events to build relationships. with and attract new prospective students.
• Coordinate and manage new student orientation with Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.
• Design and coordinate College of Law’s annual diversity pipeline program, Launch into Law.
• Manage department budget and finances, ensuring compliance with university spending policies and procedures in collaboration with the Administration and Business Manager.
• Establish and maintain relationships on behalf of the law school with prospective and admitted students, pre-law advisors, pre-law associations, alumni, and colleges nationwide, as well as various University offices.
• Serve as primary liaison between the Law Admissions office and the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) for all issues related to Unite, the College of Law admissions database and CRM.

-Responsible for 1st year students. This can include but is not limited to:
• Assist first year students in navigating personal issues arising in law school by providing guidance and support services, particularly relating to issues regarding mental, physical health and character and fitness.
• Manage first year student amendments to law school applications, coordinating approval from the Dean.
• Develop programming to assist first year students in navigating law school to meet the needs of a diverse group of students including first generation college graduates, international students, students requesting accommodations, veterans etc.
Transition individuals from applicant to admitted student to first-year law student. Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs as well as Career Services to ensure students have a seamless and integrated first-year experience.

-Evaluate applicants for admission and make admission decisions in compliance with guidelines set by the faculty admissions committee. Ensure compliance with American Bar Association, University and College of Law admission policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations including student rights to privacy. Oversee the management of Admissions Data into the database.

-Support, train, supervise, and evaluate professional and support staff in the Admissions Office. Directly oversee Assistant/Associate Director of Law Admissions Communications, Assistant Director of Law Financial Aid, and Admissions Analyst.

-Oversee entering student scholarship program - awarding incoming student scholarships while balancing discount rate with enrollment and ranking considerations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/experience/licensing:
• J.D. Degree from an ABA-accredited law school and admission to a state bar (active or inactive status) with at least four (4) years of experience in area of supervision plus one (1) year of supervisory experience is required. OR an equivalency of education and related experience is required.

Communication and other skills:
• Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills characterized by the ability to interface with a range of constituents, including Law School students, faculty, staff, alumni, and University colleagues.
• Excellent administrative, counseling, and organizational skills.
• Ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion.
• Effective use of computer and related technology for various informational and operational purposes.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Project management and organizational skills.
• Detail-oriented and efficient workstyle.
• Dependability and professional demeanor.
• Strong leadership qualities, including the ability both to delegate and to execute, thereby leading by word and example.
• An enthusiastic commitment and passion for helping students achieve their academic and professional potential.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include:
• Previous experience providing guidance and/or counseling to graduate students preferred.
• At least three (3) years of senior-level leadership experience in a complex organization is strongly preferred.
