Environmental Health Specialist Consultant - Public Water Abingdon Virginia
Manages the compliance and enforcement programs in the field office to ensure that public drinking water follows the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and the Waterworks Regulations. This may include supervision of field office staff including Environmental Health Technical Specialists. This is accomplished through managing databases; monitoring surveillance activities; initiating violation notices and enforcement actions; ensuring waterworks data is current and accurate; and providing technical assistance and training to ODW staff and waterworks owners/operators. Interprets and applies public health laws, regulations, policies, and procedures concerning public drinking water to determine compliance and reduce risks to the public’s health.

Protects the public health by ensuring that public drinking water is in compliance with the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and the Waterworks Regulations. Supervises or leads engineering functions for assigned regional area or office. Services as a subject matter expert providing technical and procedural guidance and expertise to other staff. Characteristics include establishing priorities and assigning work, auditing and approving other engineers' work, participates in engineering design evaluation for new waterworks or waterworks considering modification, monitoring new and improved facilities, conducting non-routine and final inspections, as well as interpreting regulations for owners, operators, local government, engineering consultants, and other staff. Performs routine sanitary surveys at and provides technical assistance to surface water treatment plants and systems. Evaluates and recommends revisions to local, state, or national regulations, facilitates implementation of regulations, supervises preparation of reports and provides training and technical assistance to other staff and the public. Most activities are handled independently with supervision required only for very large projects or the most complex issues.

Scientist (Microbial Reference) - CL391 Richmond (City), Virginia
The Department of General Services, Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services is seeking a Scientist who will perform high complexity testing in the Enteric Bacteriology Laboratory. This position performs highly technical and specialized testing to detect, identify, and further characterize bacterial pathogens that cause gastrointestinal disease in humans and are routinely part of outbreak investigations. Bacterial culture and testing are performed on clinical stool specimens and bacterial isolates. Testing includes conventional culture techniques, mass spectrometry, and molecular methods. This Scientist will participate in cross-training opportunities, quality assurance and safety initiatives, and assist in method validation and implementation. This Scientist routinely collaborates with other testing groups at DCLS and assists with providing support to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). These duties are performed independently with minimal supervision from the group manager.
