Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. The Chesterfield Health District provides public health services to the residents of Chesterfield County, Powhatan County, and the City of Colonial Heights. This position is based in Chesterfield.

The Chesterfield Health District is seeking a dedicated and experienced Nutritionist to join our team. The Nutritionist provides nutrition services to clients in a variety of settings within the district. Characteristic activities include conducting patient nutritional assessments and evaluations in the clinic, school and community settings, develop and monitor nutritional care plans and food packages. Certifies clients for participation in available public health programs, schedules, provides and documents basic and secondary/high risk nutrition education; makes referrals to programs such as Medicaid, AFDC, and SNAP benefits. May perform other related administrative tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

• 4 year nutrition degree and two years work experience in nutrition
• Must complete required training to obtain the Certification as a Competent Professional Authority (CPA) within 6 months of hire
• Basic knowledge of nutrition and nutritional standards
• Ability to conduct interviews and collect information
• Ability to interpret, document, calculate, and compile routine data
• Experience providing patient education and/or communicating
information to individuals
• Good communication skills, verbally and in writing, to interact with a
variety of patients, peers, and supervisors
• Ability to work effectively individually and as a team member
• Experience multi-tasking and prioritizing workloads
• Skills using computer systems

Additional Considerations

• Training, job experience, or coursework in Nutrition, Dietetics, food
services, or a related area preferred
• Bilingual in Spanish and English
• Experience obtaining blood samples/finger sticks, and taking heights and
weights of individuals
