Job Duties

The Department of History & Interdisciplinary Studies at Norfolk State University seeks applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of Interdisciplinary Studies beginning August 2023. The Department offers five curricula in History, four in Interdisciplinary Studies, three minors (Interdisciplinary Studies, History, and Africana Studies), a certificate in African and African Diaspora Studies, and fully online programs in both History and Interdisciplinary Studies.

The successful candidate will:
1. Teach undergraduate courses in Interdisciplinary Studies with specialization in critical thinking, globalization, and/or linguistics.
2. Teach undergraduate courses in critical thinking, globalization, linguistics, and/or research methods.
3. Engage in exemplary face-to-face and online teaching.
4. Actively engage in research/scholarship.
5. Actively pursue grants and participate in grant work.
6. Serve on departmental, college and university committees and participate other in meaningful service for the university community.
7. Attend departmental meetings, collegially engage with faculty and meet university deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Must possess a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies, Cultural Studies, or African-American Studies
2. Demonstrated record of teaching in the area of Interdisciplinary Studies or Cultural
Studies, and the following areas: critical thinking, globalizations and linguistics,
3. Demonstrated record of teaching research methods courses.
4. Experience with online teaching and the use of online lemming management systems (Blackboard LMS or similar). Considerable, documented evidence of training in this area is also acceptable.
5. Experience with or strong evidence of potential commitment to excellence in teaching.
6. Experience with or strong evidence of potential commitment to excellence in scholarship.
7. Experience with or strong evidence of potential commitment to excellence in department and university service.
8. Demonstrated or evidence of strong potential for successful student advisement.
9. Evidence of established externally funded, competitive, and independent appropriate for a teacher-scholar at the rank of assistant professor.
10. Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, personal integrity and a demonstrated commitment to diversity.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Considerable experience teaching in higher education.
2. Considerable experience (2 or more years) teaching online using LMS such as Blackboard.
3. Considerable experience collegiate advising.
