About the Agency
The mission of George Mason’s Gunston Hall is to stimulate the exploration and understanding of principles expressed by George Mason in the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights.
About the Position
The Archivist manages the Library of Virginia’s retention program for the Gunston Hall collection under the supervision of the Senior Curator and Head of Collections. This is a 1-year, full-time restricted position which may be extended based on availability of funding.
Incumbent is responsible for:
• Review all applicable record retention standards for an Agency of the Commonwealth.
• Develop and establish the records retention program for institutional records in compliance with applicable standards.
• Submit relevant publications through Rosetta to the Library of Virginia.
• Liaise with other departments within the organization to ensure that all relevant internal records are properly retained and collected.
• Monitor the Gunston Hall Library email account and assist with reference and research inquiries.
• Monitor research library for the safety of records.
• Orient researchers and ensure adherence with best practices for preservation.
• Create applicable access plans balancing the needs of researchers with protection of Personal Identifying Information.
• Identify relevant materials for digitization.
• Develop an institutional digitization plan.
Minimum Qualifications
• Considerable knowledge of Library and Information Sciences.
• Experience with historic records retention, management, and digitization.
• Experience handling archival records.
• Experience working with researchers and other community stakeholders while maintaining security and preservation standards in a research library environment.
• Experience suggesting and implementing improvements to Emergency Response Plans.
• Familiarity with metadata standards including Dublincore, DACS and MARC records.
• Knowledge of cataloging systems including TinyCat, OCLC, Bibliovation.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
• Knowledge of agents of deterioration and experience mitigating their impact on archival collections.
• Knowledge of emergency management protocols.
Additional Considerations
• Master’s of Library and Information Sciences preferred.
• Experience and knowledge with 18th century history desired.
• Experience cataloging material culture artifacts and working knowledge of museum standards desired.
