Job Duties

This is a restricted position funded with federal awards. The position will support the Virginia Department of Forestry’s Forest Management Division, including the Forest Health Program. The project coordinator will spend 50% of their time supporting the Forest Health program and 50% of their time supporting other Forest Management programs. The primary duty of this position is cost-share administration which includes filing and tracking cost-share applications, database management, and working with DOF's Finance department to process cost-share payments. Other duties of this position will include: forest health monitoring activities (surveying and trapping) for invasive and native forest pests and diseases, pesticide treatment projects, forest management field assistance, targeted or special project coordination, and GIS and data analysis support. Duties include serving on DOF Incident Management Team to support agency's emergency response mission.

Minimum Qualifications

Coursework in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field is required. Additional qualifications include: proficiency using Microsoft Office software; effective written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; organizational skills including attention to detail, ability to track multiple projects, and excellent time management; ability to sit at desk but also work in different types of forested terrain on foot; a valid driver’s license; and the ability to obtain a Virginia pesticide applicator (or registered technician) permit within 6 months of hire.

Additional Considerations

Previous experience managing landowner information or other database management. Knowledge of and skill in basic identification, biology and management of major forest insect pests or pathogens; basic knowledge of dendrology, forest ecology, and silviculture; experience using forest sampling techniques. Experience with ArcGIS mapping programs is also preferred.

Must pass moderate work capacity test (two mile walk in 30 minutes with 25-pound pack) annually.
