Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Advising, the Academic Advisor/Success Coach is responsible for advising, registering, and coaching new and returning students.  The Academic Advisor/Success Coach will also help implement initiatives to improve student success, retention, and degree completion. 

Job Duties

  • Provide advising to the general student population during registration events, Advising Resource Center visits, and via email, phone, Zoom, or other virtual channels.
  • Monitor, coach, and advise an assigned caseload of first-year students as needed through in-person and virtual communication channels (email, phone, Zoom, etc.).
  • Provide in-person, virtual, and/or telephone coaching and advising to students.
  • Provide registration assistance and career advising to prospective and enrolled students. 
  • Provide transfer advising to students interested in transferring to a 4-year institution.
  • Provide advising services to student population during registration events and visits to the Advising Resource Center.
  • Assist all students in the development of academic degree plans to promote retention, persistence to graduation, and degree completion.
  • Provide advising services to Distance Education students, including off-campus and online students.
  • Conduct classroom presentations and workshops on topics relevant to student success as appropriate.
  • Facilitate referrals of students to resources throughout the institution and the community to promote student success.
  • Cross-train with other Student Success staff, as appropriate, to broaden knowledge/skill base.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities on topics relevant to student success.
  • Assist in the development and dissemination of academic advisement information for students.
  • Complete other assignments as directed by supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and one year of postsecondary experience working with students for academic advising, registration, and/or other student services related to enrollment or retention.    OR
  • Associate degree from an accredited institution and three years of postsecondary student-facing experience working with students for academic advising, registration, and/or other student services related to enrollment or retention. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in counseling, psychology, education, or a relevant field
  • Student-facing experience at a community college
  • Experience with case management
  • Conversational ability or fluency in a second language

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of the community college mission
  • Knowledge of student success issues in higher education
  • Knowledge of academic advising, including best practices and related technologies
  • Knowledge of college policies and procedures, support programs, and services
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of an advisement team
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral form
  • Ability to be flexible in a changing and fast-paced environment
  • Compassion for others
  • Technology Skills: MS Office suite; digital records management systems; general operating systems and data information systems

Notes

  • Travel is minimal to Northeast State locations and professional development conferences.
  • Some evening work will be required during peak advising/registration periods.
