Responsibilities:
Working the Tues. - Sat., 6:00am - 2:30pm shift, performs series of skilled tasks in general building maintenance by assisting more senior-level trades workers and performs related duties as required or assigned.
- Under limited supervision, performs a variety of skilled building maintenance, repair and construction tasks, independently or as a crew member; and does related work as required in any trade or crew assignment;
- Performs minor mechanical, electrical, and plumbing repairs;
- Installs, repairs and maintains all door closers, panic devices, switches on automatic and handicap doors. Inspects and orders needed parts to repair or replace door pivots, and hinges;
- Installs and repairs window treatments such as screens, blinds and shades;
- Performs preventative maintenance; informs supervisor of major maintenance needs;
- Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps vehicle supplied with tools and materials and keeps it maintained and in an orderly, clean condition;
- Performs miscellaneous duties such as cleaning and painting the equipment and mechanical areas;
- Picks up materials from suppliers when requested and inspects areas and reports problems to supervisor;
- Maintains paperwork and electronic communications, including work orders, including recording time;
- Orders and includes materials on work orders in an expedient manner;
- Follows established university and departmental policies and procedures; follows established safety procedures and reports accidents and problems to supervisor promptly;
- Performs assigned progressive on-the-job training tasks to develop skills in the general maintenance trade;
- Performs other related duties as assigned; and
- Employee is also designated as “Essential Personnel.” All essential personnel employees are required to report for snow removal or other emergency when assigned.

Required Qualifications:
- Valid driver's license needed to drive GMU state vehicles; must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/;
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 4+ years) in carpentry and general maintenance;
- Demonstrated knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices and tools used in the building maintenance and construction trades;
- Knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions;
- Skill in the use of tools, equipment, materials pertinent to the trades; and
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions, diagrams and manufacturers manuals.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Vocational or technical training in related field;
- Completion of, or ongoing participation and/or completion of courses in vocational or technology education;
- Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 5+ years) in commercial carpentry work and multiple architectural building trades; and
- Journeyman license or equivalent experience.
