Position Summary
The Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity Education (CREDE) at Elon University is a space for all students, dedicated to fostering empowerment, well-being, and holistic growth. While we welcome and support the entire campus community, we place particular emphasis on elevating the experiences of ALANAM (African American/Black, Latinx/Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, Alaskan Native, and Multiracial) students. El Centro also functions as an educational and cultural resource for all members of the Elon community, offering opportunities to build cultural awareness and contribute through service and engagement.
The Assistant Director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity Education is part of a seven-person team committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through education, advocacy, and community building. This full-time, 12-month position shares responsibility for the daily operations of El Centro, including supervising, mentoring, and advising students and student leaders.
With expertise in supporting Latinx/Hispanic students, the Assistant Director plays a key role in meeting the evolving needs of Elon’s diverse student populations. The position is responsible for designing and implementing culturally relevant programming, supporting student well-being and academic success, and cultivating an affirming space that reflects the values of inclusion and excellence.
In collaboration with faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners, the Assistant Director works to create a campus culture where all students feel seen, valued, and supported. This position reports to the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the CREDE

Minimum Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in any relevant field of study with the following experience: Completed bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of post-bachelor's experience required. Completed master's degree in higher education, student personnel, or related field and 1-2 years of experience (including graduate assistantships/apprenticeships) in diversity, equity, and inclusion work or a related functional area in higher education strongly preferred.

Job Duties
- Serving as a resource and support system for international and U.S.-born Latinx/Hispanic students, faculty, and staff, offering culturally responsive advocacy, services, and programs that promote identity development, academic achievement, personal success, and social belonging.
- Designing, implementing, marketing, and assessing programs and events that reflect the diversity within Latinx/Hispanic communities across national, ethnic, and racial backgrounds, and fostering opportunities for all students to explore how race and ethnicity intersect with other aspects of identity.
- Leading El Centro’s signature events and initiatives, such as Gala Latina, Graduates Take Flight, and Hispanic Heritage Month, ensuring these programs are accessible, inclusive, and educationally impactful for the wider campus community.
- Serving as a liaison between El Centro and local organizations that support Latinx/Hispanic communities, facilitating reciprocal partnerships that benefit students and the broader community.
- Managing and updating El Centro’s website and social media platforms to ensure visibility, engagement, and access to resources and events. Advising and supporting Latinx/Hispanic-affiliated student groups and related campus initiatives, fostering leadership development and organizational success.
- Partnering with offices such as Admissions and New Student & Transition Programs to support Latinx/Hispanic student recruitment, engagement, and retention efforts.
- Supporting welcome events and orientation programming that affirm and connect Latinx/Hispanic faculty and staff within the broader Elon community.
- Collaborating with the Associate Director to coordinate, enhance, and implement the S.M.A.R.T. (Student Mentors Advising Rising Talent) Program, including the recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of mentors.
- Collaborating with the Assistant Dean and Director of the CREDE to offer support and resources for students of varying documentation statuses, in accordance with university policy and applicable laws.
- Collaborating with campus departments (e.g., Residence Life, Gender & LGBTQIA Center, Latin American Studies, Counseling Services, SPDC, Global Education Center) and student organizations (e.g., Latinx/Hispanic Union, Chi Upsilon Sigma, Lambda Upsilon Lambda) to create culturally affirming and educationally transformative experiences that promote cross-cultural engagement and cultural appreciation with a focus on Latinx/Hispanic identities.
- Developing and facilitating anti-racism and diversity education programs that cultivate intercultural competence, inclusive leadership, and respectful engagement across diverse identities.
- Contributing to campus-wide initiatives and committees that advance student belonging, success, and the university’s goals for inclusive excellence.
- Promoting Spanish language learning and cultural exploration among all Elon students, faculty, and staff, including arranging local, community-based Spanish immersion opportunities that combine language practice with meaningful volunteer service. - (Essential)
- Supervise El Centro’s student coordinators through one-on-one and team-based mentorship, emphasizing feedback, leadership development, and professional growth. -Guide student coordinators in the planning, execution, and assessment of culturally relevant programs aligned with El Centro’s mission and student learning outcomes. -Foster an inclusive and affirming team environment that encourages collaboration, creativity, accountability, and centers Latinx/Hispanic identities and experiences. -Support students in goal setting, reflection, and identity development through semester evaluations and intentional, developmental conversations. -Advises and supports the Latinx/Hispanic Union (LHU) and other related student groups and/or organizations.
- Additional Responsibilities
- Assist in the coordination of signature programs and represent the CREDE at university programs and events.
- Support departmental strategic planning, goal setting, priority completion, evaluation and assessment, and data-driven decision making.
- Support university events, including, but not limited to: Convocations, Commencement, Family Weekend, and events related to Admissions and/or New Student Orientation.
- Serve as a member of a Student Life Care and Response Team, which includes either serving in a rotational on-call emergency response role or providing initial outreach and follow-up support for student concerns -Serve on university, divisional, or departmental committees, task forces, and search committees.
- Is available for occasional weekend travel or evening work related to student leadership conferences, retreats and educational programs.
- Has a valid driver's license and is insurable by the University's carrier. -Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, & Diversity Education.
