Research Assistant Grand Forks
Prof. Jake Carstens in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences seeks one (1) Undergraduate Research Assistant to collect and process Hurricane Hunter aircraft observations from the 2022-2025 Atlantic hurricane seasons. Specifically, the student will download dropsonde observations from the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (https://www.aoml.noaa.gov/data-products/#hurricanedata), and run them through automated quality control procedures using the ASPEN software (https://www.eol.ucar.edu/content/aspen). The project, supported by the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences Research Seed Grant program, will support research efforts to improve prediction of tornadoes within tropical cyclones. The student will be trained on the necessary software tools as well as an overview of hurricane research and forecasting, then expected to complete the work over approximately 30 hours during April 2026. Opportunities may then exist for the student to conduct future funded research in Prof. Carstens’ group.
