Assistant Professor of African History Harrisonburg
The Department of History invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of African history with a specialization in Eastern or Southern Africa. The position will begin in August 2025, and PhD in History or related field in hand is preferred. The College of Arts and Letters, in which the Department of History is located, enrolls over 3,100 undergraduate majors and about 150 graduate students across ten academic units in the humanities, social sciences, and communication studies. Home to several interdisciplinary centers and institutes, the College employs 270 full-time faculty. We embrace the teacher-scholar model and encourage excellent applicants within out particular disciplines, as well as scholars and teachers eager to work across them.
Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Psychology – Clinical Psychology (Two Positions) Harrisonburg
The Department of Psychology in the College of Health and Behavioral Studies (CHBS) at James Madison University (JMU) invites applicants for two tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor and with a focus on Clinical Psychology, to begin August 2025. The new hires will join a lively pre-tenure cohort, as the department has been expanding and recently welcomed several new colleagues. CHBS is working to advance inclusionary practices, processes, and policies that promote an anti-oppressive environment where every member can flourish in shared learning, teaching, scholarship, and service. Candidates could contribute to our ongoing initiatives relating to these practices through their teaching (e.g., teaching courses that contribute to sociocultural awareness objectives in our curriculum), their collaboration with active mentorship of historically underserved students (e.g., see our PUURPLE Scholars program, https://www.jmu.edu/chbs/psyc/puurple.shtml), their service (e.g., working with our student Inclusive Excellence Council), and/or other expertise that they bring to the department. The successful candidate will join a student-centered faculty with a strong commitment to open, respectful, and supportive collegiality. The mission of the Department of Psychology is to educate our students in and contribute to the science of Psychology. The successful candidate will contribute to Abnormal Psychology and other courses in their areas of expertise, particularly our courses labelled as meeting a sociocultural awareness requirement within our BA/BS in Psychology.
Assistant Professor, Department of Engineering (Three Positions) Harrisonburg
The Department of Engineering at James Madison University (JMU) invites applicants to join our community and support our project-intensive undergraduate engineering curriculum. We are seeking to hire three tenure-track Assistant Professor positions to start in August 2025. The JMU Department of Engineering is a community of diverse educators who support each other in achieving broad successes in teaching, scholarship, and service. The department offers an ABET-accredited BS degree in engineering with new concentrations in civil and environmental, geo-environmental, and electromechanical systems. Anchored in the liberal arts through the university’s general education program, JMU’s engineering major is characterized by experiential learning of engineering in team-based settings, and the major culminates in a two-year-long engineering project experience. The department currently has eleven tenured or tenure-track faculty members representing multiple engineering disciplines, six support staff, and approximately 600 students. Its strengths include dedicated faculty and staff, an engaged and invested student body and alumni, strong administrative and lab support, and well-equipped laboratories and design studios. Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Applied GIS / Geographic Information Science (Two Positions) Harrisonburg
The Geography program in the School of Integrated Sciences (SIS) at James Madison University invites applications for two tenure-track assistant professor positions in applied GIS starting August 2025, part of a broader hiring initiative across SIS themed “Technology for Resilient Futures.” This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving, student-centered program with research and curricular strengths across physical, human, human-environment geography, and geospatial computing. We are seeking colleagues who can integrate and develop GIS and geospatial technology to build our students’ skills and bring new understanding to critical environmental and human challenges. As part of a supportive faculty team and with 200 Geography majors, successful candidates will thrive in a collaborative, outward-looking context and bring a passion for inclusive engaged learning. Our faculty are dedicated to innovatively shaping the future of geographical scholarship and education in this student-focused setting.
