Veterinary Assistant

| The primary role of this position is to provide clinical, technical, and administrative support to the
veterinary care program of the Division of Animal Resources (DAR). This position plays a critical role in
assisting with the smooth operation of the veterinary services. . The candidate will work directly with the
staff veterinarians and veterinary technicians, provide restraint of laboratory animals for physical
examinations, assist with advanced diagnostic procedures, such as radiology and diagnostic specimen
collection. Additional responsibilities include supporting hands-on training classes, administering
medications and providing surgical support as needed. The candidate must be able to recognize signs of
disease and distress in a wide variety of species and report health conditions or behavior. The candidate
will assist technicians managing delegated DAR-maintained spaces, such as the surgical suites,
procedural/training spaces, and equipment, including responsibilities like scheduling, cleaning,
restocking and maintenance of equipment. Administrative duties include maintaining the veterinary
services calendar, scheduling training programs, recordkeeping, billing, data entry, and direct
communication with researchers for scheduling, training, or compliance issues. The ideal candidate will
have excellent organizational and communication skills, along with a basic understanding of animal
research. In return, the department will provide training in all required techniques and offer a supportive
working environment.While the duties are performed primarily during normal business hours, Monday
through Friday, the candidate will also participate in a rotating University holiday schedule, assigned in
advance. |

Animal Care Technicians are responsible for cleaning of a variety of soiled animal cages and racks. The incumbent will clean, disinfect and sterilize animal cages using the guidelines established by the regulatory authorities and the Division. The responsibilities of the position will be for the health, care and husbandry of animals under the direct care of the incumbent. You will be responsible for assigned animals, which each animal will be cared for humanely, following the guidelines established by the national regulatory agencies and the Division of Animal Resources.The incumbent must observe animals daily for sickness or signs of distress and immediately report any of these conditions to the reporting supervisor or the clinical veterinarian. Additionally, must perform daily inspections of the animal rooms for repairs and environmental needs and supply requirements. Must be familiar with disease control
procedures and be able to handle animals accordingly; be able to perform weekly or as needed, cleaning assignments for areas outside of vivarium; be able to work with little or no supervision once trained on assigned tasks. Annual safety requirements will be completed to include; fit testing, TB testing and drug screening. Training will be given on how to dump soiled bedding into appropriate containers, and disposing of bags of soiled bedding. Loading the cages into cage wash equipment, and unloading and stacking the clean cages. Transporting the cages to cage preparation areas. The VCU, Division of Animal Resources maintains and checks on the research animals 365 days a year. The Animal Care Tech position is a Monday-Friday position, however some weekend and holiday work is required. |

In this pivotal role, you will provide in-person coaching and consultation, through a division leader, to teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, and related service providers; facilitate regionally based professional learning and training initiatives; and collaborate with school teams to strengthen local capacity and improve educational services. The position also involves developing and delivering targeted professional development through a variety of in-person and online formats, collaborating with statewide stakeholders to create resources and supports for professionals across our regional networks, and strategically planning and implementing project objectives to achieve measurable outcomes.
