The Opportunity

Thiess has an exciting opportunity for a Geologist to join our dynamic Technical Services team at our Lake Vermont project, located 19kms northeast of Dysart.

As their next Geologist working an 8/6 roster and reporting to the Senior Geologist within the Technical Services Coal Reconciliation, Geology & Survey Team, you will ideally have open-pit geology experience, geological modelling capabilities and an understanding of exploration sampling, mining loss and contamination parameters, coal recovery and reconciliation. You will be able to provide geological support to the mine to facilitate safe and efficient mining operations.

In this role, you will, but are not limited to:

  • Track and report on coal movement daily from pit to Coal Handling and Preparation Plant and maintain tracking records
  • Maintain presence in field identifying geological structure for surveying and supporting the operational team with coal mining activities
  • Interpret blast-hole geophysical-logging data to support maintenance of the geological structural model (Vulcan ISM)
  • Develop pre-mining targets and participate in building of representative post-mining coal model surfaces
  • Prepare coal gain/ loss and reconciliation claims for validation and submission to our Client
  • Create information maps to assist in communication of future geological structures to support planning
  • Liaise with all relevant internal stakeholders to enhance coordination between the Technical Services, Mining and Coal Handling and Preparation Plant departments and maintain strong working relationships
  • Assist with the Technical Services’ End of Month reporting processes as required
  • Fulfill support geotechnical responsibilities as outlined in the Geotechnical PHMP

About you

  • Tertiary qualifications in Geology or similar complemented by relevant experience working in operational mining environments, preferably open-pit coal
  • In possession of or able to gain Queensland Coal Board Medical and Queensland Coal Mining Industry competencies
  • Queensland Class C Licence to operate a light vehicle
  • A solution-based and positive approach to dealing with challenges and enthusiasm for learning and development
  • Strong computer skills, preferably including working knowledge of Maptek products
  • Ability to think strategically and act decisively
  • Solid problem solving
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of regulatory and legislative requirements in mining operations
