About the role

Thiess is currently seeking an experienced Technical Services Superintendent to join our projects in the Bowen Basin, Queensland.

As our next Technical Services Superintendent, you will lead a team of Mine Planners & Surveyors to provide accurate, timely, and innovative mine plans that can be implemented safely and efficiently. You will lead the development and communication of standardized systems and processes for mine planning and provide mentoring and guidance to on-site Mine Planning.

Additionally, you will:

  • Facilitate periodic reviews of all critical mine planning inputs and reconcile actual vs. planned performance.
  • Lead the development of mine design, weekly planning, and scheduling process documents, seeking feedback/review through the mine planning COP.
  • Participate in regular client and internal meetings to address ongoing mine planning methodologies and strategies.
  • Ensure regular engagement and collaborate with site technical services personnel, providing mentoring in technical development.
  • Understand and communicate contractual requirements both internally and with clients.
  • Provide mentoring to graduates.
  • Provide expert input into the Mine Planning COP.
  • Develop mid-term mine plan volumes and financial forecasting.
  • Identify project risks from technical, HSE, and cost perspectives during the mine planning phase to ensure potential impacts on the project are identified, documented, and communicated.
  • Ensure that risk management checklists are used for mine design and scheduling activities.
  • Identify appropriate risk mitigation strategies and make recommendations to Technical Services, Site, or Project Management.

About you

To be successful in this role, you should have a minimum of 8-12 years' experience in a broad range of Mine Engineering and Senior Mining Engineer roles in Open-cut Coal/Metalliferous Mining, demonstrating the ability to lead and complete planning, scheduling, haulage modelling, and generation of reports for estimators and mine plan documentation.

Additionally, you will have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Mining or Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Experience with forecasting and financial analysis.
  • Practical experience in risk management in Mine Design.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
  • High proficiency in MS Office, Vulcan, XPAC or SPRY, and Deswik Software, 3D Dig.
  • Knowledge of planning and scheduling best practice methodologies.
