About the role

The Principal Mine Planning Engineer will join our Global Mine Planning team based in Brisbane, QLD. The role will lead a small team of mining engineers providing accurate, timely and innovative mine planning and engineering solutions to the global Thiess business.

In this role, you will:

  • Apply your mine planning expertise to support Thiess’ operational teams in the efficient and safe delivery of our mining services contracts globally.
  • Take the lead for the mining engineering and mine planning support of estimates and tender submissions.
  • Identify opportunities to add value for both Thiess and our Clients.
  • Participate in ongoing reviews to assess mining methodologies, software tools, risks and strategies.
  • Lead the development of annual budgetary plans, life of contract/life of mine schedules and haulage models, as well as rolling monthly 12 month plans as required for operating projects.
  • Facilitate periodic reviews of all critical mine planning and estimation inputs, reconciling actual vs planned performance.
  • Develop and improve operational, mine planning and technical processes on our projects, using technology as needed. Including the development and review of mine design and scheduling process documents.
  • Ensure a culture of continuous checking and independent peer review is maintained.
  • Develop, train and coach less experienced mining engineers.

About you

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Mining or Civil Engineering essential
  • Significant experience in a broad range of Mine Engineering and Senior Mining Engineer capacities across open cut coal / metalliferous mining. With a significant portion of this being spent directly on-site.  
  • Experience leading small technical teams will be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and complete life of mine planning processes.
  • Experience with feasibility studies and financial analysis to demonstrate an understanding of economics and commercial risks.
  • Proven experience in the generation of budgetary and forecast mine plans for brownfield and greenfield projects.
  • Practical experience in risk management and optimisation in mine design.
  • High level of proficiency in MS Office suite, Vulcan, SPRY, XPAC, Deswik and 3D Dig type software’s will be highly regarded (or similar considered).
  • Experience working with cultures outside of home country, language skills other than English; highly regarded.
